April 7, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns announced today the 25 players who will be making up the team's 2015 opening day roster. The Suns begin their 35th season on Thursday, April 9 when they take on the Hickory Crawdads in Hickory at 7:00pm. The Suns home opener will be a week later on Thursday, April 16 against Lakewood.

Headlining the group of players headed to Hagerstown this season is the Nationals 22nd ranked prospect according to Baseball America, Raudy Read. Read spent last season in Auburn where he played for the Doubledays of the New York-Penn League. He was the #13 prospect in the league according to Baseball America, and he hit .281 and nearly half his hits went for extra bases. Defensively he threw out 47% of basestealers last year and he is only 21-years old.

While 2015 will be the first season for Read in a Suns uniform, that will not be the case for a number of his teammates. In total there are 12 players on this year's opening day roster who have previously spent time with the Suns. They include RHP Andrew Cooper, RHP Sam Johns, LHP Robert Orlan, RHP David Ramos, RHP Ryan Ullman, RHP Phillips Valdez, LHP Joseph Webb, INF Austin Davidson, INF David Masters, INF Brennan Middleton, OF Narciso Mesa, and OF Wilman Rodriguez.

There are eight players on the opening day roster who the Nationals acquired in the 2014 draft, four of whom were selected in the first ten rounds. Breaking the roster down by position, there are 13 pitchers (three lefties), two catchers, six infielders, and four outfielders. There are three players who hail from the state of Texas, two from Virginia as well as California, and one each from Illinois, Nevada, New York, Missouri, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida and Kentucky. In addition there are 10 foreign players on the roster (seven from the Dominican Republic, two from Venezuela, and one from Ontario, Canada).

The average age of the players on the roster is 22 years old, with the oldest being 24 and the youngest 20. Leading the group of young adults will be second year manager Patrick Anderson, who skippered the Suns to the South Atlantic League Championship Series last year. Anderson's staff includes second year hitting coach Luis Ordaz and second year pitching coach Sam Narron.
