Hagerstown Suns News Release
Despite a superb outing from spot starter Travis Nesmith, the Suns lost the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader by a score of 1-0. Nesmith (1-3) struck out five and allowed only one run in 5 1/3 innings, but was out-dueled by Thomas Gorzelanny of Hickory. The Suns managed only one hit off of Gorzelanny as they were shut out for the third time this season.
Hickory scored their only run in the sixth on an RBI double from first baseman Brad Rea scoring Bobby Kingsbury, last nights hero for the Crawdads. Last night Kingsbury hit a three-run walk-off homerun giving Hickory the win 9-8.
The Suns tried to create some late inning magic of their own Tuesday, but they came up short stranding runners on second and third to end the ballgame in the seventh inning.
The Suns came around in the second game of the double dip, exploding for four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. Jon Coutlangus singled and Jay Knowlton was hit by a pitch forcing Hickory to bring in Kurt Shafer to replace starter Yoann Torrealba. The second pitch Shafer delivered was deposited over the outfield wall by third baseman Nate Schierholtz, giving the Suns a 3-2 lead. Jonathan Armitage promptly followed Schierholtz with a home run of his own, his third in as many days. The back-to-back home runs were the fourth from both Armitage and Schierholtz, who are now tied for the team lead.
RHP Ryan Sadowski had his best outing of the season, going 4 1/3 giving up two runs on three hits. Sean Martin (1-2) came in from the bullpen to record the victory and Tim Alvarez pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 to pick up his fourth save of the season.
With the split the Suns record goes to 8-13 on the season. The team travels to Charleston WV tomorrow to begin a three game series with the first place Alley Cats. The Suns are looking for redemption against the Alley Cats, a team that swept the Suns at Municipal Stadium in April.
