Sundogs Squeak Past Mallards in Shootout 3-2
January 26, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Jake Hauswirth and Derek LeBlanc converted penalty shots after Jason Morgan tied the game with just under six minutes left in regulation as the host Arizona Sundogs edged the Quad City Mallards 3-2 in a shootout Saturday night. The Mallards (17-18-5, 39 points) earned one point for the shootout loss and finished the night three points behind the eighth place Sundogs (19-20-4, 42 points) in the race for the final Central Hockey League playoff spot.
Anthony Perdicaro provided the only successful Mallard penalty shot in response to the Sundog shootout goals from Hauswirth- who also scored in regulation- and LeBlanc- who set up Morgan's equalizer.
Morgan buried LeBlanc's centering pass at 14:11 of the third to erase the 2-1 lead Mike Hellyer had given the Mallards by pouncing on a rebound just under two minutes earlier.
It was the Mallards who had to come from behind earlier in the evening. After a scoreless first period, the Sundogs took a 1-0 lead when Hauswirth tipped in a power play goal at 2:32 of the second period. The Mallards responded with a power play goal of their own at 13:42 of the second. Matt Duffy one timed the game tier home from the left wing circle.
Fine play from both goaltenders- the Sundogs' David Brown, who made 33 saves, and the Mallards' John Murray, who stopped 32 shots- punctuated proceedings throughout the contest.
The Mallards return home to meet the Bloomington Blaze next Tuesday night at 7;05 p.m. Next Tuesday evening will also see Mo Mallard welcome a host of other area mascots to the i wireless Center for All-Star Mascot Night.
Tickets for next Tuesday's tilt- as well as seats for all remaining Mallards regular season home games- can be purchased in person at the i wireless Center ticket office, at Ticketmaster outlets, through www.ticketmaster.com or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000.
