Sundogs Overpower Bees to Win Third Straight

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - A four-goal second period for the Arizona Sundogs was the difference as they topped the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Friday night by a 6-4 final. It was Arizona's third straight win and their fourth in the last five games.

Tyler Matheson scored two of Arizona's goals just minutes into the second period and 20 seconds apart to make it a 3-1 lead. David Nimmo and Kyle Hood added the other two. Hood's tally came on the power play and was part of a three-point night.

With the win, the Sundogs pull within one point of the Bees and the Texas Brahmas for fourth in the Berry Conference standings. Arizona and the Bees square off again tomorrow night.

Both teams traded goals in the first period as Adam Bartholomay opened up the scoring for Bees 4:21 in. Patrick Schafer tied the game at 1-1 on a shorthanded breakaway for his second of the year.

In the third, the Bees closed the gap to two with a goal by Zac Pearson between the circles at 6:28. JP Chabot extended the lead again for Arizona to 6-3 with his team-leading eighth goal of the season before the Bees struck one more time courtesy of Tim Billingsly.

Scott Reid took the win for Arizona, stopping 36 of 40 shots. Wylie Rogers started the game for Rio Grande Valley making 13 saves through two periods before being relieved by John Murray in the third. Murray stopped five of six shots, Rogers took the loss.

Luke Erickson saw his team-high point streak come to an end at eight games. Hood has recorded an assist in the last six contests for the Sundogs. The 6-4 win for the Sundogs ended a streak of five straight one-goal games.

The Sundogs finished 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Bees went 1-for-5.

The Sundogs and Killer Bees close out their weekend set on Saturday at 7:05 PM MST.
