Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks lost, 4-1, Friday night to the Allen Americans at Independence Events Center. Despite outshooting the Americans 39-33, the Mavericks dropped their fifth consecutive game (0-4-1) and are now 7-5-2. Cole Ruwe scored the lone goal for the Mavericks and the Mavs were momentarily within one goal of tying the game late in the third period, but a breakaway goal and empty netter by the Americans settled the score at 4-1. The game was played in front of the fourth sellout crowd in five home games this season.
The Americans opened up the scoring just 1:55 into the game on a power play goal from Brian McMillin. He took a backdoor pass from Jim McKenzie and buried it passed Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger. Nick Layton earned the second assist on the goal. Missouri controlled much of the period after the opening five minutes and the Mavericks had a handful of quality scoring chances but were unable to light the lamp. The Mavs had the edge in shots through the first 20 minutes, but the Americans took the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Allen doubled their lead at the 12:08 mark of the second period on a goal by Tyler Ludwig. Ludwig's goal was assisted by Spencer Edwards and McMillin. The Mavs and Americans continued to pile up the shots in the period and at the end of two, the Americans held a 25-24 advantage over Missouri.
Ruwe finally got the Mavs on the board at the 6:05 mark of the third period. A shot from the top of the circles seemed to be caught by Americans' goaltender Marco Cousineau, but the puck squirted behind Cousineau and into the net, cutting Allen's lead in half. Ryan Jardine and Mike Wakita assisted on the goal. Allen regained their two goal lead at the 18:37 mark of the final period on a breakaway goal from Keith Johnson. Bruce Graham assisted on the goal. An empty netter by McMillin sealed the 4-1 victory for Allen.
Cousineau finished the night with 38 saves on 39 shots by the Mavericks. Charlie Effinger made 29 saves on 32 shots faced. With his assist, Jardine is now just four points away from 300 for his professional career..
The Mavericks hit the road for a game Saturday night against the Quad City Mallards in Moline, Illinois before three games against the Dayton Gems next week. The Mavs and Gems face off in Dayton on Thursday and return to Independence for games on Friday and Saturday evenings. Faceoff for both home games is 7:05pm. Tickets for all regular season games are on sale now via Ticketmaster. Call (816) 252-7825 for more information or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com.
