Arizona Sundogs News Release
The Arizona Sundogs (24-30-5, 53 points) are coming off a three-game set against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees last week at Tim's Toyota Center that saw them finish with a 0-2-1 record and one point. Looking for their third playoff berth in as many seasons, Arizona sits two points back of the Corpus Christi IceRays for the Southern Conference's fifth and final playoff spot with just five games remaining in the regular season.
Sundogs Storylines:
- The Sundogs close out their regular season home schedule with two games this week against the Amarillo Gorillas (Wednesday, 7:05pm) and the New Mexico Scorpions (Friday, 7:05pm) before heading on the road for three-straight against the Scorpions to close out the 2008-09 regular season.
- Joel Irving leads the Sundogs in scoring and ranks 15th overall in the CHL with 64 points (32g/32a). His 32 goals rank tied for fourth overall and are three back of the league lead. Irving owns a four-game point streak, having tallied two goals and two assists in that span.
- Adam Perry ranks second on the team and third overall among CHL rookies in scoring with 53 points (21g/32a), despite having played 13 less games than leader Darryl Smith (LAR) and 18 games less than second-ranked rookie Jeff Pierce (ODE). Perry's four shorthanded goals rank tops amongst fellow rookies and fourth overall in the CHL. Perry owns a four-game point streak, having tallied five points (2g/3a) in that span.
- Veteran Chris Bartolone leads Sundogs defenseman and ranks tied-for-sixth among fellow d-men in the league with 46 points (10g/36a). His 36 assists rank fourth among CHL defensemen, three back of the lead and his eight power play goals rank tied-for-second, two back of the league lead.
- Jon Landry owns a four-game point streak, having recorded six points (1g/5a) in that span. He ranks fifth on the team in scoring with 40 points (11g/29a) and he leads the team in plus/minus with a plus-7 rating.
- Karl Sellan continues to lead the Sundogs and CHL in penalty minutes (PIM), something he has done the entire season. The third-year forward has accumulated 388 PIMs in 59 games. Sellan has also netted 29 goals to rank tied-for-tenth in the CHL.
- In his first three games back from injury, Tyler Liebel has registered four points (3g/1a) and is plus-2. He has also tallied a goal in three-straight games heading into the week.
- Kyle Hood has collected 10 points (3g/7a) in his last 10 games, being held scoreless just twice.
- Since joining the Sundogs on Jan. 30, former NHLer Dwayne Hay has averaged a point-per-game with 17 points (5g/12a) in 17 contests.
- The Sundogs power play ranks fourth in the CHL, converting at a 19.41% clip (73 power play goals on 376 chances). The power play is a different story, ranking 16th in the CHL at 75.63%.
- Arizona is winless in its last six home games (0-5-1). The Sundogs have struggled at home this season, a place they have consistently dominated during the first two seasons. Arizona owns a 10-16-4 home record with two games remaining at Tim's Toyota Center. In 2006-07, Arizona finished 21-10-1 at home and in 2007-08, the Sundogs bettered that with a 23-8-1 mark. On the flip side, Arizona has maintained a .500 record away from home and sits at 14-14 -1 with three road games remaining in the season. In 2006-07, the Sundogs finished 13-18-1 away from home and in 2007-08 Arizona collected a 16-11-5 road record.
- Marco Emond ranks fourth in the CHL among goalies in minutes played with 2259:47 and saves with 1148. His two shutouts are one shy of the league lead.
