March 9, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Central Hockey League announced today that the recipients for the Oakley CHL Player and Goaltender of the Week for the period ending Mar. 8th, 2009 are forward Riley Nelson of the Colorado Eagles and Doug Groenestege of the Oklahoma City Blazers.
Nelson, has goals in all four Eagles games last week and has moved to tied for fourth in the CHL in points with 73 points (26-47=73). The Cranbrook, British Columbia native started the week with a goal, an assist and a +2 rating in the Eagles 4-1 win at New Mexico. He followed that up with goals in each of the team's next two games (both losses) and in the final game of the week scored a goal with two assists in Colorado's win over Rapid City. Two of Nelson's goals on the week were shorthanded (he has five SHG's on the season).
Groenestege had a whirlwind of a 72 hour period starting in three straight games in a three-in-three weekend that saw the Blazers and Groenestege go 3-0. The Stratford, Ontario native allowed just one goal in wins over Wichita and Amarillo and then made 30 saves and stopped five of six shooters in a the Blazers 4-3 shootout win over New Mexico. This is the second time that Groenestege has won the weekly goaltending award (won for the week of February 16th). On the season, the first-year Blazer leads the league with a 2.08 goals against average and sits with a 21-5-4 record.
In recognition of their achievement, both Nelson and Groenestege will receive a special gift from Oakley.
