Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Central Hockey League Southwest Division foes the Arizona Sundogs and New Mexico Scorpions met for the second time this season on Tuesday night at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Unlike the first meeting, New Mexico dominated the first half of the game and tallied four goals through 21 minutes of play en route to a 5-2 victory and sole possession of second place in the division. Sundogs leading scorer Martin Gascon collected two assists in the loss to push his points total to 14.
New Mexico grabbed the first lead of the game 6:58 into the contest as a crowd of players gathered in front on Sundogs goaltender Marco Emond. Jamie Herrington collected his fourth goal of the year, pushing a loose puck past a screened Emond to give his club an early 1-0 lead. Aaron MacInnis and Sam Bowles were both handed assists. Arizona pulled even six minutes later on their first and only power play opportunity of the period as Jon Landry fired a one-timer from the point, top-shelf over the glove of Scorpions netminder Andrew Martin. Landry and Sundogs leading scorer Martin Gascon exchanged passes before Landry tallied his second of the year. Veteran Chris Bartolone also tallied a helper on the equalizer. New Mexico pushed their first period lead to 3-1 with goals by Torren Delforte and Craig Macdonald separated by 1:21. With 4:45 to play in the opening frame, Dylan Row and Christopher Robertson combined to find Delforte streaking down the near boards. Delforte sent a deceiving wrist shot beneath Emond for his seventh marker of the season. Macdonald followed with his eight of the year, lifting a backhand into the net to give his club a two-goal cushion heading into the first intermission. Mitch Stephens and Neil Trimm were credited with helpers on the Macdonald tally. The Scorpions outshot Arizona 21-10 in the first 20 minutes of play.
New Mexico pushed the score to 4-1 with an early goal from Macdonald to open the second period. Macdonald found the back of the net for his second of the game just 1:08 in from second-year defensemen Tyler Fuller and Row. Both clubs earned quality scoring chances following the early goal but each goalie turned aside each shot faced throughout the remainder of the period. The Sundogs outshot New Mexico 11-9 in the period but the visiting Scorpions held a 30-21 advantage through 40 minutes of play.
Arizona controlled the pace of play throughout the first half of the third period, but just past the midway point the Scorpions took a commanding 5-1 lead with rookie forward John Mazzei's second of the season from Corey Courchene and Robertson. Arizona would answer a minute-and-a-half later to pull back within three but neither team would score again en route to a New Mexico 5-2 win. Gascon registered his second helper of the game, feeding linemate Mark Kolanos at the top of the goal crease for his sixth of the season. Arizona outshot New Mexico 14-7 in the final frame.
Emond fell to 4-3-1 on the year after stopping 32 of 37 shots in the loss while Martin blocked 33 of 35 shots to improve to 3-2-0 in seven appearances. The Sundogs finished 1-for-4 with the man advantage while holding New Mexico scoreless on five power play opportunities Tuesday night.
Next up for the Sundogs is a two-game set against the expansion Rapid City Rush on Friday and Saturday night. Both games are slated for 7:05pm start times at Tim's Toyota Center. Tickets are available by phone at 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), online at www.gettix.net and in person at the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office.
