Connecticut Sun News Release
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (April 14, 2014) - The Connecticut Sun selected Chelsea Gray from Duke University with the 11th overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm on Monday evening.
Gray was the last of three Sun first-round acquisitions. Connecticut began the draft by selecting Chiney Ogwumike with the No. 1 pick, then acquired Alyssa Thomas with the fourth overall pick as part of a trade with the New York Liberty that also included Kelsey Bone and a first-round pick in 2015.
"A healthy Chelsea Gray is probably a top five pick in this draft," Sun coach Anne Donovan said. "So being able to acquire her for our future is a steal for our team."
A two-time All-American, Gray was averaging 10.8 points, 7.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.9 steals in 17 games during her senior season before suffering a broken kneecap. The co-ACC Player of the Year as a junior, Gray played in 25 games before suffering a dislocated kneecap. The 5-foot-11 guard finished her Blue Devil career with 1,210 points, 545 assists, 478 rebounds and 298 steals.
With the No. 25 pick, the Sun selected DeNesha Stallworth from Kentucky. The 6-foot-3 forward/center native of Richmond, Calif. led the Wildcats in field goal percentage (.518), field goals made (142) and steals (43), while ranking second in scoring (12.2), rebounding (6.9) and blocked shots (34). Despite missing five games due to midseason knee surgery, Stallworth scored in double figures 20 times this season, including eight straight.
The Connecticut Sun begin its 12th season at Mohegan Sun Arena on May 16th against the New York Liberty at 7 p.m. Season tickets and mini plans are on sale now, and can be purchased by calling a Sun Ticket Representative at 1.877.SUN.TIXX (786-8499) or via email at tickets@connecticutsun.com.
