Washington DC - Tonight, the Connecticut Sun (10-33) fell to the Washington Mystics (27-16) inside CareFirst Arena.
Three Sun players earned double digits in the loss with Diamond Miller leading the way with 19 points. Raegan Beers and Leila Lacan followed with 11 points each. Aaliyah Edwards led on the boards with 13 rebounds to go alongside eight points.
Connecticut got on the board first with Diamond Miller picking up a quick two from inside the post. After being stalled at 4-4, Lacan earned her second bucket of the night to give the Sun a 6-4 lead. Both squads traded shots not allowing the other to fully pull away. Georgia Amoore knocked down a triple from '24 to give the Mystics a three-point 11-8 advantage. The Sun remained composed despite the offensive surge from Washington as they cut the lead to one point, 15-14 following the made two from Nell Angloma. Cotie McMahon and Michaela Onyenwere, and Kiki Iriafen put the Mystics ahead 23-16 at the end of the first quarter. Edwards and Lacan led the Sun with four points apiece.
The second frame opened with a three from Miller following the helper from Gianna Kneepkens. After the miss from Shakira Austin, Raegan Beers converted the and-one opportunity to put the Sun within one, 23-22. Austin was sent to the line on the other end where she went 2-of-2 but, Kneepekens answered with her first points of the night putting Connecticut within striking distance 25-24. Onyenwere drove to the basket for a two-point lead, however it was Miller that leveled the contest 27-27 with a 24' three. Mirroring the first, neither team could gain complete control. The Sun led by as much as four in the second quarter, with 35-31 as its largest lead of the game. Down the stretch, the Mystics tied the game 35-35 before Lacan responded to push the Sun out 37-35. With less than a minute left the quarter went down to the buzzer as Leger-Walker and Miller came up big for Connecticut. Ultimately, it was Washington that led 44-42 at the half after McMahon totaled five points to end the quarter. Miller was the only Sun player in the double-figures with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Offense for both teams carried over into the third quarter as shots were falling on each side. The Mystics led 48-47 as fouls plagued both squads, but Sonia Citron lifted the Mystics to 52-47 with back-to-back two point shots. Despite the scoring gap, Leger-Walker used her range for three to cut into the lead 54-50. Connecticut sent the Mystics to the charity stripe where they collected two points and added three more after the shot from deep from Betnijah Laney-Hamilton. McMahon gave the Mystics a ten point 61-51 lead with 3:26 left in the quarter after finding the net from inside. Angloma, Miller and Edwards added the final seven points for Connecticut, but the Sun trailed 66-58 headed into the final frame.
Lacan got the offense started in the fourth with a 28' from behind the arc following the dish from Kneepkens. Both teams went scoreless as defense became the theme of the quarter. After a quiet first three quarters, Amoore added three after the helper McMahon giving Mystics eight-point 69-61. After having no answer for the Mystics, Angolma ended the Sun cold streak using the assist from Leger-Walker for two. With 2:37 on the clock, Kneepkens and Miller added four more points but with less than a minute remaining, the game was out of reach. The Sun fell in its final away contest 79-69.
