Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers' first half hopes came to an end on Sunday evening as Sugar Land rallied from a 4-1 deficit to take a 6-4 decision at Constellation Field.
With a 3 1/2 game lead and the tiebreaker, Sugar Land clinched the first half with the victory.
For awhile, the night looked promising for the Barnstormers. After Barrett Barnes led off the night with a homer for Sugar Land, Lancaster struck for four runs in the top of the second off Konner Wade (4-1). Trayvon Robinson led off with a double inside the third base bag. With one out, Grant Desme walked. Nate Coronado's ground ball eluded third baseman Kyle Kubitza to the backhand side and got to left, allowing Robinson to score. Anderson De La Rosa brought a second run home with a double to the warning track in left. Tyler Bortnick's single up the middle made it 3-1, and Darian Sandford produced a fourth run with a sacrifice fly to center.
Lancaster never got another runner to second base in the game.
The Skeeters tied the score in the fourth inning. Courtney Hawkins pulled a grounder toward the hole at short. It was cut off by Nate Coronado, who spun and made a high throw to first. Kubitza, playing in his final game, doubled over Robinson's head in left to score the first run of the inning. Anthony Giansanti singled to center, sending Kubitza to third. Brooks Hall balked home one run, and Albert Cordero knotted the game with a single to right.
Two more runs crossed in the bottom of the fifth. John Anderson (0-1) walked Colin Walsh on a full count pitch to start the inning. Matt Chavez struck out swinging, and Anderson pushed the count on Hawkins to 0-2 before the Skeeters' left fielder singled to right center. Kubitza put his team into the left with a ground single through the hole on the right side, and Cordero capped the scoring with a sac fly to right.
Lancaster's only other chance came up short in the seventh. With two outs, De La Rosa singled, bringing Tyler Bortnick, who had Lancaster's only two homers of the series, to the plate. Bortnick drove a Matt West pitch to the warning track in left.
Five of Lancaster's remaining six batters struck out, including all three against Felipe Paulino in the ninth. Paulino earned his 17th save.
The Barnstormers open a four-game series against the Road Warriors on Tuesday evening with a doubleheader starting at 6:00.
