North Bay Battalion News Release
NORTH BAY, Ont. - Quentin Musty's goal at 17:15 of the third period proved the winner as the Sudbury Wolves defeated the injury-depleted North Bay Battalion 6-4 in an Ontario Hockey League game Sunday.
Kocha Delic and David Goyette each had one goal and two assists for Sudbury, which got one goal and one assist from Dylan Robinson and its other goals from Marc Boudreau and Jacob Holmes. Musty added an assist, while goaltender Mitchell Weeks made 30 saves.
Sudbury, which lost 4-1 on the same ice Thursday night before downing the visiting Oshawa Generals 4-2 Friday night, has a won-lost-extended record of 12-20-4 for 28 points, fourth in the Central Division.
Brandon Coe and Owen Van Steensel had one goal and one assist apiece, and Dalyn Wakely and Nic Sima also scored for North Bay, 19-13-5 for 43 points, second in the division. Mitchell Russell provided three assists, and goaltender Joe Vrbetic faced 35 shots in a Memorial Gardens without spectators.
The Troops, who lost 3-2 in overtime Saturday to the host Barrie Colts, were without a fourth prominent forward in Russian import Matvey Petrov, who incurred an upper-body injury in that game.
"I thought today there were ups and downs in terms of some really bright spots and then some really negative spots," said coach Ryan Oulahen. "A lot of our kids played extremely well today. It was nice to see some goals go in for them, and then I just didn't like our goals against, some kind of work ethic-based, which is disappointing."
Delic, alone in the slot, redirected the puck with his right foot to give Sudbury a 4-3 lead at 7:06 of the final period, and Musty made it 5-3 when he threw the rubber toward the net from the left wing.
With Vrbetic gone for a sixth attacker, Coe connected from the right-wing circle on assists by Russell and Van Steensel at 18:23 before Goyette put the puck into the empty net at 19:32. Coe secured his team-leading 25th goal of the season, giving him 63 points, tied with Wyatt Johnston of the Windsor Spitfires atop the OHL scoring race.
Sima gave the Troops a 2-1 lead at 3:40 of the second period, beating Weeks between the legs off a rush down the right wing. Ty Nelson had the sole assist on Sima's first OHL goal.
Van Steensel capitalized on the power play at 5:46, driving to the front of the net from the right side and cashing a forehand for his third goal. Coe and Russell assisted.
Robinson replied at 6:49, nine seconds after the Battalion's Chase MacQueen-Spence went off for hooking. Defenceman Robinson drilled the puck from the top of the right circle, with assists to Musty and Evan Konyen.
Rearguard Holmes tied it 3-3 at 17:43, pinching deep on the left wing and taking a cross-ice pass from Delic to one-time the puck behind Vrbetic. Robinson had the second assist.
The teams traded first-period goals, with Boudreau opening the scoring at 16:12 when he stopped at the right faceoff dot on a rush and, using Alexander Lukin as a screen, snapped the puck past Vrbetic. It was Boudreau's fifth goal and second since a trade from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Wakely replied on the power play at 18:13. Coe fired the puck from the right wing, and Wakely got his stick to the trickling disc at the left side of the crease. Russell also assisted on Wakely's ninth goal, his second in two games.
The Battalion visits the Niagara IceDogs at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a game rescheduled from Dec. 19 because of covid cases among the IceDogs. It can be seen live in North Bay on YourTV Channels 12 and 700.
