Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - A gutty triple-comeback effort from the Otters earned them a crucial point in a shootout loss to the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday night. With the Spirit back in town, the Otters would look to even the season-series in the eighth meeting of the year. Marshall Nicholls would get the nod in net again, as he'd face off with Islanders' prospect Tristan Lennox.
Penalties would be the story of the game on Sunday afternoon, and it would start in period one as the Otters and Spirit would start on the 4-on-4 just five minutes in. With less skaters and open space, Roberto Mancini (8) would score the game's opening goal just 6:47 into the game. As the four-man would expire into a power play for Erie, the Otters would respond quickly with Elias Cohen (12) netting the game-tying goal just :23 later. With seven total penalties in the first period, the opening frame would finally come to a close with a 1-1 tie, Erie leading in shots 11-8.
Much of the story of the second would stay consistent from the first period, as the two Western Conference foes would continue to showcase that familiarity does indeed breed contempt. Eight total penalties would strike the two teams, but neither team would be able to convert on their man advantages. In fact, the only goal of the frame would come from a toss in from Evan Klein (5) that would take a strange bounce off the backboard and sneak behind Marshall Nicholls to give Saginaw a 2-1 lead. The period would be capped off by a fight between Dan D'Amato and Pacey Schleuting, with both receiving major penalties. Saginaw would hold their lead after 40, with Erie leading in shots 22-16.
A chippy game would find the two teams on a four-on-four heading into the third period. D'Amato's fight to close the second would prove to be a major turning point, as Erie would come out in the third period with a fire in their belly. Just :46 into the third period, Elias Cohen (13) would score on a highlight-reel goal to knot things up from the 4-on-4. 1:04 later, the success of the Otters would continue as Christian Kyrou (8) would give Erie its first lead of the night, and continue to climb the ranks of leading defenseman goal-scorers in the OHL. Looking for insurance to help secure their win, Captain Daniel D'Amato (12) would give the Otters just that 9:55 into the frame to make it 4-2 Erie. Halfway into the third period, Brayden Hislop would be served a match penalty for a high-stick to Owain Johnston, and the Otters would get five minutes of time-killing with a two-goal lead. The Otters would control the rest of the way, and Erie would take a 4-2 win to close out the weekend. Christian Kyrou would net his second-career Game-Winning Goal, and Marshall Nicholls would pick up his second career win.
Erie, who took 3/6 possible points this weekend. will get a much-needed day of rest tomorrow after a three-in-three, but will have a quick turnaround as they return to Niagara for the second time this season on Thursday night. Erie will return home on Friday, January 28 and Saturday, January 29 to close out action in the first month of the year.
