Kingston Frontenacs News Release
The Kingston Frontenacs (19-9-3-0) and the Niagara IceDogs (9-18-1-1) squared off on Friday night at Leon's Centre with the Fronts taking a 6-2 victory and winning consecutive games for the first time since December 12th and are back atop the East Division by a point over idle Hamilton.
The Black and Gold dominated the game with 52 shots. Martin Chromiak's three points (2G,1A) led the way with Francesco Arcuri and Lucas Peric each scoring a pair of goals. Rookie netminder Aidan Spooner earned his fourth win in his fifth start making 26 saves. Niagara's Josh Rosenzweig made 46 saves in the loss.
First Period
The game started out tentatively with Niagara hitting the post 1:50 into the period for the best chance for either side during the opening five minutes with the IceDogs holding a 4-2 shot advantage. Kingston would take over with a pair of goals outshooting Niagara 22-7. It was the most shots the Frontenacs have fired on net in a first period this season.
Lucas Peric (7) wired a low seeing eye shot past Rosenzweig for the opening goal of the game. The defenceman made a good move waiting for traffic in front of the Niagara goal before firing in the screened shot for the 1-0 lead. Jake Murray and Martin Chromiak assisted at 6:07.
Kingston's top-ranked powerplay had their first opportunity midway through the period and were called for a second penalty seconds later giving Kingston 1:38 of five-on-three time. The Fronts powerplay unit had good zone time but couldn't generate a grade A chance.
A third Kingston powerplay with 5:35 left was called but Kingston's Alec Belanger was sent off on a major penalty nullifying the Fronts man advantage sending the teams to the four-on four situation for 1:48.
Niagara would have 3:23 of remaining time on their first powerplay time of the night, but Fronts penalty killers limited the IceDogs to just two shots before Kingston would go up a pair of goals just after the Niagara penalty ended.
Francesco Arcuri (15) buried a shot in the last minute to send the home team to the intermission with the 2-0 lead. Frasca assisted on the strike at 19:44.
Second Period
Kingston would take a four-goal lead in the middle period with a pair of early quick goals while firing 18 more shots on the Niagara net and allowing only seven on Spooner playing solid two-way hockey.
Chromiak (16) scored just 46 seconds into the stanza. After taking a cross ice pass from Wright, the LA Kings prospect fired a quick shot past Rosenzweig making it 3-0. Wisdom earned a second assist of the game. Arcuri would score 32 seconds later giving the Frontenacs the 4-0 lead at 1:18 with Frasca earning his second point of the game.
Jackson Stewart hit Alec Leonard on a solid check in the neutral zone as Kingston played a very physical game as was the case in last night's win over Hamilton.
Niagara got on the board at the 5:00 minute mark on an unassisted Aidan Castle (7) goal for a 4-1 score.
Rodwin Dionicio and Stewart would then drop the gloves eight minutes in as the two squared off in a spirited tilt with both players given majors and game misconducts ending their night.
Niagara had a powerplay ten minutes in but went shotless before they were called for a double-minor sending Kingston back to a fifth powerplay. It was 5-1 when Chromiak (17) scored his second goal off a one-timer from the top of the left circle after taking a smooth feed from Braden Hache with Edmonds also earning an assist at 16:26 rounding out the middle-frame scoring.
Third Period
Niagara had an early powerplay at 2:48 and were able to make it a 5-2 score with a broken play in front of Spooner at 4:10. Pano Fimis (6) extended a point streak to eight games with the goal assisted by Brendan Sirizzotti and Danil Gushchin.
A second Kingston penalty in the third came with Paul Ludwinski and Maddox Callens having a great shot on Rosenzweig off a shorthanded chance, but the goalie made a save-of-week candidate off the splits to stone Ludwinski maintaining his teams three-goal deficit.
Kingston had a sixth opportunity with the extra skater with six minutes remaining managing to hit Rosenzweig with their 50th shot on goal finishing with 52 total on the Niagara net.
Peric (8) scored his second goal of the night with under two minutes left to close out the scoring at 6-2. Edmonds and Frasca earned assists at 18:35.
