Subway Super Series Coming Back to Kelowna
February 17, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Kelowna Rockets News Release
The Kelowna Rockets, along with the Kamloops Blazers, have been announced as the WHL host cities for the 2015 Subway Super Series between CHL all star teams and Team Russia taking place Nov. 9 to 19, 2015.
The 2015 Subway Super Series will open in Kelowna on Nov. 9, 2015 and continue in Kamloops Nov. 10 as Team WHL will take on Team Russia, before the Ontario Hockey League and then the Quebec Major Junior League play host to the final four games.
"I think this is a great opportunity for our season tickets holders," said Rockets President/GM Bruce Hamilton. "The last few years the series has been very good as the Russians have been sending a very good team. I think we will have a couple of players in Nick Merkley and Rourke Chartier as candidates for the team and that will be a great opportunity for them and exciting for our fans as well."
"We are currently working on the ticketing plan and will have details announced at a later date," added Gavin Hamilton, Rockets Vice-President of Business Development. "Our goal is to have it included in our season ticket holder packages as a perk to our season ticket holders."
2015 will mark the return of the Subway Super Series to Kelowna following a 2009 match-up where Rockets forward Brandon McMillan scored the game-winning goal earning player of the game honours for Team WHL in a 4-2 victory to clinch the last six-game series sweep for the CHL.
CHL teams hold an overall record of 49-17-6 against Russia in this event, however four of the last five series have been decided in the final game including last November when Russia won by an 11-7 margin in points to earn their third series victory since 2010.
The series has been an integral part of the identification process for Team Canada for the past 12 years prior to the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. This season in Montreal and Toronto all 22 members of Canada's championship roster were present and past CHL players, while 18 members of Team Russia competed in the 2014 Subway Super Series.
