Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Florence, S.C. (July 27, 2015) -- Three early runs, combined with exceptional pitching, paced the Lexington County Blowfish to a crucial 3-2 road win over the Florence RedWolves on Monday night.
A two-run single by Danny Edgeworth (Mercer University) and an RBI single by Deric Boone (Southern Union State) capped the only scoring the Blowfish would need. After that point, only five Blowfish batters would reach base.
Pitching kept this game low scoring throughout. Zack Kamerman (Nyack) pitched four solid innings in his Blowfish debut, allowing only a run. Trevor Bradley (USC-Aiken) perhaps had the best outing of his already impressive 2015 campaign, pitching five innings, and dodging several scoring opportunities with his devastating slider.
The ninth inning encapsulated his appearance completely. After allowing a leadoff single to Chris Adams, and balking to move him into scoring position, Bradley struck out Nate Wierzgac.
CPL All-Star Ben Holland stepped to the plate, and for the first time this season, head coach Jonathan Johnson delivered the edict to intentionally walk a batter. That would not only leave the tying run in scoring position, but also put the winning run, represented by Holland, on base.
That did not matter. Bradley struck out Andrew Castillo swinging, and Drew Wharton looking, to end the game.
Bradley evaded trouble due to leadoff singles, followed by sacrifice bunts in the sixth and eighth innings. He utilized his slider to strike out nine batters over his five innings of effort. He would be rewarded with the win, his fifth of the season.
Florence's Josh Reagan settled down after allowing the three early runs. He retired 12 of the final 15 batters he would face, not allowing a runner to pass first base.
Connor Speed entered the game in the seventh inning, and prevented Derek Olenchuk (Newberry) from adding an insurance run. J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) smashed a line shot into left field, but it was flagged down by Adams to end the inning. Speed would retire the Blowfish in order in the eighth and ninth.
Edgeworth batted with one out and the bases loaded in the first inning, following softly-hit singles by Boone and Dalton Duty (University of Central Florida). The Suwanee, Georgia native blooped a single of his own into left field, plating them both.
Olenchuk would be helped home by another bloop single by Boone in the second inning. Boone ended one of his most productive nights as a member of the Blowfish 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Blowfish now move into the third playoff spot with the win, and a decisive game upcoming with Florence at Lexington County Baseball Stadium on Tuesday could further cement that lead in the playoff race.
Dog Day Tuesday, presented by the MetLife Premier Client Group of the Carolinas, is up next for the Blowfish at 7:05 p.m. Fans can bring their dog, on a leash, to the ballgame, to enjoy a night out with the entire family.
