Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Mighty Mussels were shut out for the second time this homestand and fourth time this season Thursday in their 2-0 loss to the Clearwater Threshers at Hammond Stadium.
In his first Single-A start, Mussels (28-26) starter Miguelangel Boadas (0-1) tossed five innings, allowing just one run on five hits. Jarrett Whorff and Jackson Hicks teamed up to limit a hot-hitting Clearwater (39-14) offense to just one run over their four innings in relief.
After four shutout innings from Boadas, Ryan Leitch and Cade Fergus singled to put runners on first and second for the Threshers with no outs in the fifth. The next hitter was Erik Brito who dropped down a bunt down the third base line. After third basemen Jorel Ortega made a clean barehand pick up, his throw to first glanced off first basemen Dillon Tatum's glove and rolled into foul ground which allowed Leitch to score and give the Threshers a 1-0 lead.
With the same score in the top of the sixth, Otto Kemp launched a towering home run onto the top of the berm in left field that extended the Clearwater lead to 2-0. Kemp finished the evening with two hits after entering the game hitless since May 23.
The Mussels were held scoreless for the remainder of the game as relievers Gabriel Cotto (2-0) and Wen Hui Pan combined for five shutout relief innings behind their starter Bailey Falter. The game lasted two hours and 11 minutes.
The Threshers' magic number now sits a one game, meaning a win tomorrow would clinch the FSL West first-half division championship and a berth to the postseason.
The Mussels will start Andrew Morris (1-1, 5.28) against the Threshers' Jean Cabrera (2-2, 4.60). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Hammond Stadium with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network.
