TL Midland RockHounds

Streaks & Atonement; 'Hounds Win, 7-4

September 2, 2021 - Texas League (TL)
Midland RockHounds News Release

In the top of the sixth inning Wednesday night, RockHounds left fielder Devin Foyle lost a ball in the stadium lights, turning a routine play into a tie-breaking, fluke double. These things happen. Besides, Devin atoned ... and in a big way.

In the home half of the inning, the RockHounds tied the game at 4-4 when Max Schuemann extended his on-base streak to 24 games with an RBI single to left (see "Kibbles & Bits," below).

Foyle then stepped to the plate and ripped a three-run home run into the right field bullpen, putting the 'Hounds on top, 7-4.

The bullpen trio of Eric Mariñez, Austin Briggs and Montana DuRapau (save) made the lead stand up, retiring nine consecutive batters, each with a 1-2-3 inning.

Frisco jumped to a 3-0 lead through four innings, with Dio Arias and Justin Foscue each contributing an RBI double.

The RockHounds loaded the bases with one out in the fifth on singles from Foyle and Chase Calabuig and a walk to Jonah Bride. They each came around to score with JJ Schwarz (single), Jhonny Santos (fielder's choice) and Logan Davidson (sacrifice fly) each driving in a run to tie the game at 3-3.

A two-out double by Frisco's Davis Wendzel in the top of the sixth appeared to have done no damage when Josh Stowers lifted a seemingly harmless fly ball to left field. But the ball was lost in the lights and Wendzel (who was running with two outs) scored easily to put Frisco back in the lead, 4-3.

Collin Theroux coaxed a walk to open the home half of the fifth and Calabuig followed with his second hit of the night. From there, Max extended his streak ... Devin MORE than atoned ... and the bullpen slammed the door.

Kibbles & Bits

Max Schuemann went just 1-for-5 for the second consecutive night (keeping a streak alive is NOT easy) but extended his on-base streak to 24 games (with hits in 22 of them).

*The remarkable 24-gamer now spans virtually 100 at-bats with Max hitting .424 (42-for-99) with a .491 on-base percentage. *

Devin Foyle is averaging nearly .400 in a six-game hit streak (11-28, .393) and his three-run, game-winning home run Wednesday night pushed his RBI total to 57, which ranks sixth in the Double-A Central.

Edwin Diaz is 3-for-6 (with two doubles) in the series and has been brilliant at third base. At least two of his tremendous plays at the hot corner have been reminiscent of another RockHound - - Gold (and Platinum) Glove winner Matt Chapman (RockHounds in 2014 & 2016).
