Hooks Blow Past Naturals in Five-Run Fifth as Series Evens
September 2, 2021 - Texas League (TL)
Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
The Northwest Arkansas Naturals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead Wednesday night, but a five-run rally with two outs in the fifth inning pushed the Corpus Christi Hooks out ahead for a 5-2 win over the Naturals at Arvest Ballpark.
Drew Parrish extended his scoreless innings streak to 11.0 innings over his last two starts, as he threw 4.0 shutout innings while striking out six, including striking out the side in the 3rd to cap a stretch of eight consecutive batters retired.
Holden Capps got two outs with relative ease in the fifth but Corpus Christi opened the floodgates and using a close call that went in their favor, rallied with four straight two-out hits to tag Capps for five runs.
The Naturals bullpen kept the game close, as Daniel Tillo and Jose Cuas combined for 3.0 scoreless innings. Tillo's outing stretched his current run to nine straight starts and 12.2 innings without allowing a run. Cuas has surrendered just one earned run since July 28, an 11-game and 18.1 inning stretch (0.49 ERA) where he has struck out 23 batters.
Northwest Arkansas' first run scored in the second inning, as Meibrys Viloria was the benefactor of a series of Brett Daniels mistakes. The Hooks' starter hit Viloria on the first pitch of the 2nd inning, then Viloria advanced to second base on a wild pitch. He moved over to third base on an errant pickoff throw from Daniels, then scored on a balk.
In the 3rd inning, the Naturals rallied with two outs, as Jeison Guzmán (MLB Pipeline's No. 21 Royals' prospect) singled and then the team drew three straight walks, ending with Freddy Fermin bringing around a run with a bases-loaded walk.
The Naturals only mustered four hits and while his 8-game hitting streak ended, Vinnie Pasquantino (MLB Pipeline's No. 18 Royals' prospect) drew a walk in the 3rd inning to continue his on-base streak and extend it to 23 consecutive games.
Northwest Arkansas (54-49) looks to get back out in front this week in the third game of the series with Corpus Christi (47-57) on Thursday night with Angel Zerpa (MLB Pipeline's No. 19 Royals' prospect) starting for the Naturals.
