Komar Dominates in Game One Victory, Skender Walks It off in Game Two

SAN ANTONIO - Brandon Komar took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning during a 2-0 Missions victory in game one. In game two, the Missions came from behind to walk-off the Sod Poodles 5-4. Ethan Skender hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In game one, the Missions offense struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Facing Amarillo starter Ryne Nelson, Juan Fernandez connected on a solo home run. His eighth long ball of the season gave the Missions a 1-0 lead.

Brandon Komar was the game one starting pitcher for the San Antonio Missions. He put together his best outing since joining the Missions in late June. Komar retired the first 11 batters he faced before allowing a walk to Buddy Kennedy in the fourth inning.

Komar carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. With one out recorded, Eduardo Diaz broke up the no-hitter with an infield single to second base. Diaz ended up on second base after a throwing error from Komar on a failed pickoff attempt. Diaz advanced to third base after a fly out. With Diaz on third and two outs, Komar struck out Dominic Miroglio to end the threat.

Komar was replaced by Tom Cosgrove following the fifth inning. He improved his record to 2-3 on the year after pitching five shutout innings and allowing one hit and one walk. He struck out three batters.

The Missions added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Olivier Basabe hit a one-out single and Esteury Ruiz was hit by a pitch. With one out, both runners advanced on a balk from Nelson. Ethan Skender drew a walk to load the bases. Eguy Rosario scored Basabe on a sacrifice fly.

Cosgrove pitched a scoreless sixth inning while retiring all three batters faced. Jose Quezada converted his 15th save of the season. The Missions won game one by a final score of 2-0.

In game two, the Amarillo Sod Poodles struck first with a run in the top of the inning. Facing Missions starter Sam McWilliams, Geraldo Perdomo drew a one-out walk. Perdomo stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error from Chandler Seagle. He came around to score after Stone Garrett struck out swinging on a pitch in the dirt. Seagle threw him out at first base while Perdomo scored.

The Missions had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning. Dwanya Williams-Sutton began the inning by reaching on a throwing error. He advanced to second base during the play. A wild pitch moved him to third base with no outs. With the infield moved in, Kelvin Melean grounded out and Williams-Sutton stayed put. Seagle was the next batter and he hit a ground ball as well. This time, Williams-Sutton broke for the plate but was tagged out trying to score.

The Sod Poodles added two insurance runs in the top of the fourth inning. Facing Henry Henry, Canzone and Diaz both singled with two outs in the inning. Andy Yerzy drove in Canzone with an RBI single. Diaz scored on an attempted double steal. Yerzy was caught stealing while Diaz was able to cross the plate.

San Antonio fought back to tie things up in the bottom of the fourth inning. Facing Amarillo starter Kenny Hernandez, the Missions scored three runs on three hits. Ethan Skender started the inning with a single followed by a double from Rosario. Allen Cordoba drove both runners in with an RBI single to left field. Cordoba came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Williams-Sutton. It was a 3-3 ballgame after four innings of play.

Amarillo regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Henry was replaced by Nick Kuzia after recording a strikeout and a walk to Kennedy. A wild pitch advanced Kennedy into scoring position and a fly out moved him to third base. A two-out single from Diaz drove in Kennedy for the go-ahead run.

San Antonio bounced back and tied the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Facing Justin Lewis, Allen Cordoba was hit by a pitch. He came around to score courtesy of a stolen base and two errors. He successfully stole second base but advanced to third on a throwing error from Yerzy and then scored on a throwing error from Diaz.

The Missions wound up victorious after some heroics in a wild seventh inning. Williams-Sutton was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Melean reached base on a fielder's choice as Williams-Sutton was out at second base. Seagle dropped a single into center field to advance Melean to second base. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Esteury Ruiz drew a walk to load the bases. Ethan Skender was the hero as he hit a walk-off single to score Melean. The Missions took game two by a final score of 5-4.

The San Antonio Missions continue their seven-game series with the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Thursday, September 2nd. Left-hander Osvaldo Hernandez (4-8, 5.06) is scheduled to start for the Missions. Right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (1-0, 1.46) is the scheduled starter for Amarillo. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.
