Austin Bruins News Release

A five-game winning streak has moved the Austin Bruins (31-10-11) within a point of clinching home ice in the first round of the Central Division playoffs. Saturday at Riverside Arena, the Bruins completed a weekend sweep of the Aberdeen Wings (23-26-2) with a 3-1 win in a preview of a potential first round playoff series.

For the second straight night, Austin jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Jacob Kullberg (Kallered, Sweden) scored the first goal at 3:47, his second of the weekend. Liam Feeney (Foxboro, MA) took the initial shot, sending a two-hopper on goal. Wings rookie goalie Luke Kania (Chicago, IL) kicked the rebound out to the slot and Kullberg threw a backhander past him.

Late in the period, Ian Scheid (Coon Rapids, MN) made it 2-0, when he fired a wrist shot from the right point that made it through a Nico Sturm (Augsberg, Germany) and by Kania. The Bruins outshot Aberdeen 19-9 in the opening frame.

The Wings leading scorer Michael Soucier (Caledon, ON) ripped a shot past Bruins goalie Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) to cut the Austin lead in half early in the second period, but the Bruins had an answer. Luke Forfar s (Darien, IL) shot from the left circle ricocheted off of Kania s glove and trickled into the net at 12:28 to give Austin a 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission. The Bruins outshot the Wings 19-5 in the frame, and held a 38-14 shots advantage through the first 40 minutes.

The Bruins kept the Wings at bay in the third period, even though Aberdeen skated a stretch of 1:40 on a 6-on-3 man advantage with an empty net and two Bruins in the penalty box. Austin successfully killed off both penalties leading to the final horn. Kielly stopped 19 of 20 shots in his 19th win of the season. Kania made 42 saves in his Wings debut in the loss.

Austin stays at home for a Wednesday game against the Brookings Blizzard at 7:05pm at Riverside Arena. Then the Bruins head to Brookings for a 7:15pm start Friday at the Larson Ice Center. Both games can be seen on fasthockey.com and heard on 1480AM KAUS in Austin.
