Tri-City Storm News Release
KEARNEY, Neb. - Two weeks after two of the Tri-City Storm's 2011 futures picks made the U.S. Under-17 Select Team, incoming Tri-City forward Tim Lappin earned a spot with the U.S. Under-18 Select Team.
USA Hockey made the 22-man roster announcement Thursday morning that will compete in the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament from Aug. 8-13 in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia.
Lappin, 17, was the first pick (Second round - 17th overall) by the Storm in the 2010 Futures Draft.
"Tim did an outstanding job in our June main camp, and to see him earn a spot with the Under-18 team a month later says a lot about his potential with the Storm this season," said Storm GM/Head Coach Drew Schoneck. "We are thrilled to see three of our younger players make these two prestigious rosters and look forward to having them with the Storm over next couple seasons."
Lappin, who's cousin Nick Lappin will also play for the Storm this season, finished last season with the Chicago Mission U18 midget team. He had 20 points (8 goals, 12 assists) in 38 games playing in the Tier I midget league.
"I was speechless to make the team, and I just so thrilled to be selected to represent our country overseas," said Lappin, who's from St. Charles, Ill. "I'm looking forward to wearing a USA jersey and trying to help the U.S. win the gold in August."
"This is a great experience that I believe will make me a better player before suiting up with the Storm this season."
Lappin enters his first-year eligibility for the NHL Entry Draft and is uncommitted to an NCAA college. However, he says that he wants to focus on playing for Under-18 team and the Storm, postponing the college commitment until he's ready.
"I know eventually the college offers will fall into place if I focus on playing my best hockey for the Storm and my country."
The Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament includes: Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. Out of the 22 players on the U.S. roster, Illinois, Massachusetts and Michigan each have four representatives.
Forwards Trevor Moore and Dan Labosky, who were both 2011 Storm futures picks, earned a spot on the U.S. Under-17 Select Team that will compete August 9-13 in the 2011 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Season tickets for the 2011-12 season are on sale now. Call the Storm hockey office today at 308.338.8011 for more information or visit www.stormhockey.com.
