Iowa Barnstormers News Release
DES MOINES- It was the tale of two halves as the Iowa Barnstormers could do nothing wrong in coasting to a two touchdown halftime lead before watching it slip away as the Green Bay Blizzard's league leading defense was the difference in a 46-40 victory before 8,234 fans at Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Field.
The American Conference Midwest Division leading Green Bay Blizzard improve to 7-3 on the season, while the Barnstormers' fourth straight defeat drops them to 3-7 in their return to arena football.
The âStomers jumped to an early 16-0 first quarter lead on the strength of two Joe Brannen touchdown strikes and a 43-yard Jeff Glas field goal. Green Bay quickly answered with a Scott Drafts 19-yard TD pass to Antoine Burns and a one-yard TD plunge by Drafts on a quarterback keeper.
Tim Dodge then lived up to his "T.D." nickname by immediately taking the ensuing kickoff 58 yards for a Barnstormers score. On Green Bay's very next possession, LB Jack Walker, Jr. jumped an out route, intercepting a Drafts pass and rumbling 22 yards for a touchdown. The Blizzard and âStormers traded touchdowns before a 31-yard Bob Fostrom field goal narrowed the âStormers lead to 37-23 as the first half ended.
The third quarter saw the Blizzard's top ranking defense begin to stiffen, holding the âStormers to a lone Jeff Glas 46-yard field goal, while the Blizzard offense began to warm up with a two-yard touchdown run from Tyre Young and a 25-yard touchdown strike from backup quarterback Coco Blalock to Chrissinger-Hill.
The âStormers appeared to dodge a bullet as Blizzard kicker Bob Forstrom missed a short field goal that would have evened the score at 40; but, a Brannen fumble on the very next snap was recovered in the end zone by Green Bay's Gus Tyson to give the Blizzard their first lead of the game at 44-40 with 4:36 left in the fourth quarter. The final nail in the coffin was a Joe Sykes sack of Brannen in the Barnstormers end zone for a safety, which concluded the game's scoring at 46-40.
Next week the Barnstormers travel to Oklahoma to face the defending af2 Arena Cup champion Tulsa Talons.
