Storm Wins Second Straight OT Game, Downs Connecticut 90-87

EVERETT, Wash. - And then there were none.

Sue Bird buried a pair of 3-pointers at the outset of overtime, and the Seattle Storm scored the first eight points of the extra session, then hung on to beat the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night in Angel of the Winds Arena, 90-87.

Bird finished with a team-high 21 points for the Storm (4-1), who handed Connecticut (5-1) its first loss. The Sun came into town as the last undefeated team in the league.

Seattle was ahead twice inside the final minute of regulation time, only to see the Sun tie it both times. A Jonquel Jones 3-pointer from the top of the key knotted it at 77-77 with 42.3 seconds left..

Bird hit two free throws for a 79-77 lead at the 32.3 second mark. But a lay-in by DiJonai Carrington with 15.3 to go tied it again, 79-79.

But the Storm never got off a final shot in regulation, as a pass by Bird skipped out of bounds just as time was about to expire.

She made up for that immediately, burying a 3-pointer from the left side just seven seconds into overtime for an 82-79 lead. Jewell Loyd, who finished with 19 points, then went for a reverse lay-in off a pass from Mercedes Russell for an 84-79 advantage.

On the Sun's next possession, Bird stole the ball and fed it to Loyd going down the left side. Loyd got it right back to Bird for a 24-footer that swished through to make it 87-79 with 3:57 left.

Connecticut ran off five in a row to get within 87-84. Breanna Stewart, who was kept off the board for the entire second and third quarters until hitting two free throws late in the fourth, then buried a trey from the top of the key, pushing the lead back to 90-84.

The Sun got back within three on a Jonquel Jones 3 at the 1:10 mark. But that was the final points for either team. Connecticut did have a chance to get a game-tying three in the final seconds, but Jasmine Thomas' pass for Brionna Jones went out of bounds with 3.9 seconds to go.

The battle between two of the league's heavyweights was punch-counterpunch all night, with multiple scoring runs by both sides. The Storm led most of the way, but the game was tied five times, and the lead changed hands eight times.

Jonquel Jones had a double-double of 28 points and 13 rebounds for the Sun.
