Storm win thriller by three

Birch Run, MI – The Great Lakes Storm won the game tonight against the Sioux Falls Skyforce 111-108 (6.0, 1.0) to move to 13-11 on the season. It marks the first win against a Western Conference opponent this season. Sioux Falls dropped to 15-7 on the season and heads home to Sioux Falls and awaits the Storm for two home games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Looking to earn some respect with a win against one of the top teams in the CBA, the Storm jumped out to an early lead as they won the first quarter 31-24 behind eight points from Jackie Butler. The Storm maintained their lead in the second quarter and went into halftime with a comfortable 61-52 margin, winning the second quarter 30-28. Butler had 20 of his game-high 28 points at halftime. The two teams traded baskets in the third as Sioux Falls could not get any closer then five points. The Storm won the third quarter 24-23 and went into the final stanza with a 10-point lead. The Skyforce made their final push in the fourth quarter and finally tied the game up at 106-106 with just over a minute to go on a 3-pointer by Randy Livingston. Butler followed that with a 3-point play that pushed the lead back to three with :53 to go in the game. After a missed shot by Rich Melzer, the Storm tried to use up the clock. Ezra Williams turned it over with :16 to go and the Skyforce pushed it ahead for a quick bucket to make the score 109-108. After a foul on Sioux Falls, Williams redeemed himself by making two free throws to push the lead back to three with :09 on the clock. David Bailey missed a double clutch three with five seconds to go and Lawrence Nelson came up with the offensive rebound. He quickly kicked it out to Livingston, who made a three-pointer, however, the referees waived it off as it came after the buzzer. The StormÂ’s next game is on Sunday, January 9th against the Gary Steelheads. Tip-off is set for 7:05 at the Birch Run Expo Center.
