Great Lakes Storm News Release

Birch Run, MI (March 17, 2005) – The Great Lakes Storm won tonight against the Rockford Lightning 121-112 (5.5, 1.5) to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. The Storm played with six players most of the game as Doug Smith was out with an injury, Joe Dabbert played only eight minutes due to a sore knee, and Willie Simms and Kasib Powell were out with suspensions.

The two teams traded baskets in the opening quarter and Rockford eventually went up by as many as nine points and led 33-28 after one quarter. It was much of the same in the second quarter as neither team could take control and the Storm went into halftime trailing 61-58. Williams led all scorers with 18 of his game-high 40 points in the first half. The Lightning gained an 11-point lead early in the third quarter and looked like they might run away with it as the Storm players were running out of gas. They battled back and only trailed by three (88-85) going into the final quarter. The Storm finally took the lead with just over 7:00 to go in the game and took their largest lead of the game as they led 97-92 after a three-pointer by Jamel Gooding with six minutes to go in the game. The teams traded baskets the next few possessions and Rockford took their final lead of the game with 3:00 to go as they led 105-104. Ezra Williams finished off his outstanding performance with 14 points in the fourth quarter and gave the Storm a chance to win the series in Rockford.

The Storm's next game is on Saturday, March 19th on the road against the Rockford Lightning. Tip-off is set for 1:05 at the Rockford MetroCentre.
