Seattle Storm News Release
This Week's Opponents
New York: The Storm and Liberty will meet for the first time in the regular season after Seattle rolled to a 71-43 win in exhibition play on May 7. New York shot just 22.4 percent from the field in the loss, including 10 percent (2-20) in the first quarter. Sue Bird led the Storm with 11 points and shot 3-for-4 from behind the arc. The Storm trail 6-3 in the all-time series after splitting a pair of games in each of the last two seasons.
Connecticut: The home team has won the last five meetings between Seattle and Connecticut (eight straight including the 2004 WNBA Finals), a streak that includes the Sun's 85-81 win at Mohegan Sun Arena on June 9. Janell Burse's 23 points and career-high 14 rebounds were not enough to overcome the Sun's 13-point advantage at the free-throw line (Connecticut had 32 free-throw attempts, compared to 12 for Seattle). Seattle leads 6-4 in the all-time series, including a perfect 4-0 at KeyArena.
Stormin' the All-Star Game
Seattle will be well-represented at the All-Star Game this week, as both Bird and Lauren Jackson were voted by fans as starters for the Western Conference team. Bird, who was the conference's leader in fan balloting with 99,258 votes, will be making her fourth All-Star appearance. Jackson was voted in as a starter by the fans for the second consecutive season and will be making her fifth All-Star appearance overall. The 2006 WNBA All-Star Game presented by Vonage will tip off at 4:30 p.m. (PDT) this Wednesday, July 12, at New York's Madison Square Garden. The game will be televised on ESPN.
