Storm Set to Host Stars in Game 1 of 2020 Preseason
Kearney, NE. - The Tri-City Storm opens the 2020 preseason schedule at the Viaero Center tonight in a matchup against the Lincoln Stars. Tonight's matchup for the Storm will be the first against a USHL opponent in 224 days. The game is the first battle of the 2020 Corn Cup preseason event between the Storm, Stars, and Omaha Lancers. As previously announced, the matchup tonight will be closed to the public due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Tonight's game is the first of six scheduled preseason games for the Storm. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
Tri-City (0-0-0-0) held a free scrimmage for its fans last weekend at the Viaero Center and the team now begins play in the 2020 Corn Cup tonight. The inaugural Corn Cup preseason event will feature all three Nebraska-based USHL teams and will use the final preseason standings to determine a winner. The Storm posted the most wins of any USHL organization during the 2019-2020 preseason with a final record of 5-1. Tri-City finished the 2019-2020 regular season with a record of 24-17-5-2. For the second consecutive season, Tri-City completed the year with the league's top penalty kill (87.8%). The Storm's power play in 2019-2020 scored more goals than any other team in the USHL's Western Conference (44). In head to head battles between the Storm and Stars last season, Tri-City posted a record of 3-2-0-0. Last season, the Storm began preseason play with a 6-4 win over the Lincoln Stars at the Viaero Center. Following tonight's contest, Tri-City will play additional home games in the 2020 Corn Cup on Wednesday, October 21st & Sunday, October 25th against the Omaha Lancers. The Storm's final game of the preseason Corn Cup schedule will take place on Halloween in a Saturday, October 31st contest against the Lincoln Stars at the Viaero Center. Under Head Coach Anthony Noreen, Tri-City holds a combined three-year preseason record of 11-5-2.
Lincoln (0-0-0-0) travels to the Viaero Center tonight to open its preseason schedule. The Stars finished the 2019-2020 preseason with a record of 2-2-0-0 and produced 2019-2020 regular season record of 23-20-3-2. Last season, Lincoln's penalty kill finished last among USHL teams (76.0%). The Stars' power play finished behind only the Chicago Steel and Tri-City Storm at (20.9%). Chris Michael enters his 4th season in the Stars organization (previously served as Assistant Coach & Associate Head Coach) and he is set to make is debut as the Head Coach of the Lincoln Stars in tonight's road game against the Storm. Following tonight's game, Lincoln returns home tomorrow for an afternoon matchup against the Omaha Lancers at the Ice Box in Lincoln. The Stars will host the Storm on Friday, October 23rd in the team's only home matchup against the Storm in the 2020 Corn Cup. The Lincoln Stars were the only team to defeat the Tri-City Storm in the 2019-2020 preseason. The Stars lone win over the Storm in last year's exhibition schedule was a 2-1 victory on September 14th in the I-80 Showcase at Ralston Arena.
Tonight's game is set to begin at 7:05pm CT, and will be streamed live on HockeyTV, and Storm Radio.
