Lincoln Stars News Release
KEARNEY, Neb. - The Stars dropped their preseason opener against the Tri-City Storm, falling 4-2 on Saturday night at Viaero Center.
Storm defenseman Guillaume Richard took center stage early, scoring on Tri-City's first shot of the game at 2:53. Richard would add a power-play marker at 11:09, leading Tri-City to a two-goal cushion after twenty minutes.
The Storm would increase their lead to 3-0 thanks to Morgan Winters' goal at the 2:25 point of the second period. Lincoln was outshot 21-8 in the middle frame, but Stars goaltender Guy Blessing shined with 20 saves to keep his team down 3-0 heading into the third.
Stars forward Will Margel broke through for Lincoln, firing home a power-play goal 43 seconds into the third period. Aidan Thompson and Winter Wallace were credited with the assists on Margel's goal. Just under five minutes later, Lincoln was sent to the man-advantage once again thanks to a Josh Eernisse holding minor. Spencer Smith capitalized on the ensuing power-play, cutting Lincoln's deficit to 3-2 at 5:57. It was Smith's first game back following an upper-body injury suffered in early February. Aleksei Sergeev registered the lone helper.
Lincoln's rally would be thwarted by Caden Villegas, who pounced on a rebound with under four minutes left in regulation to put the game away for Tri-City. The Storm outshot Lincoln 42-23 en route to a 4-2 victory. Ryan Ouellette stopped 21 shots in the victory for Tri-City while Blessing made 38 saves for the visitors.
###
The Stars will have a quick turnaround, hosting the Omaha Lancers at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday at the Ice Box.
