Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Lake Elsinore Storm scored two ninth-inning runs on Friday night and held on to defeat the Quakes for a second straight game, winning 5-3 at The Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga.
Former Quake Michael Collins' fourth hit of the night, an RBI double to put the Storm ahead to stay at 4-3.
The Storm got a lead-off single from Cole Figueroa off Quakes' reliever Steven Geltz (0-1) to open the ninth. After a sac bunt by Vince Belnome moved the go-ahead run into scoring position, the Quakes brought Eddie McKiernan in from the bullpen to face Collins. Collins responded with his fourth hit of the game, driving a pitch to left-center field to score Figueroa, making it 4-3. Three batters later, Cody Decker capped the inning with an RBI double, scoring Collins to make it 5-3.
The Quakes had a shot in the ninth, as Alexi Amarista reached with an infield hit to open the frame. Gabe Jacobo walked with two outs to bring the winning run to the plate. Adam Younger, pinch hitting for Dillon Baird who had been hit by a pitch in his prior at-bat, struck out to end the game, giving Brad Brach his 11th save of the year.
The Quakes grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first, as Tyson Auer and Roberto Lopez had RBI hits to give the Quakes the advantage against Storm starter Erik Davis.
Quakes' starter Matt Shoemaker took a shut-out into the fifth, but RBI hits from Collins and Daniel Robertson evened the game at 2-2.
Baird got the lead back for the Quakes in the bottom of the inning, homering to center field for his sixth of the year, making it a 3-2 game.
That lead only lasted until the next half-inning, as Jose Perez replaced Shoemaker and gave up a homer to the first man he faced, as Cody Decker pulled one out to left field, tying the game at 3-3.
Storm reliever Colt Hynes (3-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win.
