San Jose Giants News Release
High Desert's Denny Almonte and Jake Shaffer each blasted home runs and the Mavericks never trailed en route to an 8-4 victory over the San Jose Giants on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. High Desert plated eight runs a day after scoring 15 against the Giants as the Mavericks claimed their third consecutive win to open the series. The loss was San Jose's sixth in their last eight games and drops the Giants' overall record to 14-14.
Juan Perez (3-for-5, 2 2B, RBI) hit a pair of doubles and drove home a run to lead a 12-hit San Jose offensive attack. Charlie Culberson (2-for-5, 2B), Francisco Peguero (2-for-5, RBI, SB) and Brandon Belt (2-for-4, 2 RBI) also contributed two hits apiece.
Giants starter Eric Stolp (1-3) suffered the loss on the mound after surrendering five runs (all earned) on nine hits over four innings of work. Stolp struck out two and walked none.
High Desert jumped in front 2-0 in the top of the second inning against Stolp as Johermyn Chavez reached on a one-out infield single before Almonte stepped to the plate and belted a two-run homer to left.
In the third, consecutive singles from Kyle Seager and Edilio Colina started the frame before a one-out single off the bat of Rich Poythress brought home another run. Stolp did manage to retire Almonte on a deep fly out to left field to strand the bases loaded.
San Jose broke through in the bottom of the third when four consecutive hits produced two runs against Mavericks pitcher Bobby FaFromboise. With one out, Perez doubled to the fence in left center field before Culberson reached on an infield single. Peguero then lined a single into center field to plate Perez before Belt bounced a single through the right side scoring Culberson to make it 3-2. However on the play, Peguero was thrown out at third base by the right fielder Chavez and then after Drew Biery singled, Johnny Monell grounded out to end inning.
The Mavericks quickly took back the momentum in the top of the fourth as a pair of one-out singles from Juan Diaz and Seager put runners on first and second. Colina then hit a groundball to shortstop that appeared to result in an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play, however the second baseman Culberson was ruled to have not touched the bag and Seager was ruled safe as the Giants recorded only one out on the play. Nate Tenbrink followed with a ground ball single up the middle to plate both runners and give High Desert a 5-2 lead.
The Giants got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth as James Simmons singled with one out before coming home on Perez's two-out bloop double down the right field line. However, the Mavericks responded in the fifth against reliever Scott Nestor (2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) when Almonte reached on a two-out double before Shaffer drove a fly ball over the fence in left field a two-run homer and a 7-3 High Desert advantage.
The Giants scored their final run of the afternoon in the bottom of the seventh as Culberson doubled to lead off before coming home on Belt's one-out single to make it 7-4. Biery though followed by lining into an inning-ending double play.
The Mavericks plated a run in the top of the ninth and Cheyne Hann tossed two scoreless innings with just one hit allowed to finish the contest and earn his fourth save of the year.
Brian Anderson (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO), who was added to San Jose's roster before the game, did not allow a run in either the seventh or eighth innings in his first game since the 2007 season. Anderson, the 2006 California League Pitcher of the Year with the Giants when he amassed a league-record 37 saves, had not pitched in three years due to injury. The right-hander retired six out of the seven batters that he faced.
