Storm Names Shelley Patterson Assistant Coach

SEATTLE, Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007 -The Seattle Storm today named Shelley Patterson, an 18-year coaching veteran at the professional and collegiate levels, as assistant coach for the 2007 WNBA season, Storm Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Anne Donovan announced.
"Shelley and I worked together in the ABL (American Basketball League) as well as in Indiana during the Fever's expansion season; we are very fortunate to have her join our staff," Donovan said. "Shelley has tremendous experience in the WNBA as an assistant, as well as many years in the college game. Her complete knowledge and history in the WNBA and her solid reputation with the players she has coached make her the perfect fit for our Storm team."
A native of San Jose, CA., Patterson served as an assistant coach for the Charlotte Sting in 2006 under head coach Muggsy Bogues. Patterson was also an assistant for the Los Angeles Sparks during the 2005 season.
Patterson began her career in 1999 in Houston where she served as an operations assistant and won a WNBA Championship with the Comets. She then spent four years working as an assistant coach with the Indiana Fever, after joining the team in 2000 for their inaugural campaign. She also served on the coaching staff for the Phoenix Mercury.
"I'm excited to be part of an organization that has proven to be one of the WNBA's most successful. I'm also pleased to be reunited with Coach Donovan and to work with such a talented ensemble of players and staff," Patterson said. "As an outsider, I have always admired the relationship between the Storm and their fans and to have the opportunity to work with the best fans in the WNBA is an honor."
In addition to her work in the WNBA, Patterson served as head coach for the National Women's Basketball League's (NWBL) Chicago Blaze in 2005 and worked as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Rage of the ABL during the 1998-99 season.
She began her coaching career in 1989 as a recruiting coordinator at Indiana State University and has served stints at Ohio University, the University of Arizona, Wake Forest and Dayton.
As a player, Patterson spent her college career at Washington State University where she still ranks among the school's all-time leader in assist and steals.
Also joining the 2007 Storm staff as the team's athletic trainer is Kyla McDaniel. An 18-year athletic training veteran with experience in treating elite athletes from professional teams including the National Football League Europe's Scottish Claymores, the Extreme Football League's (XFL) New York/New Jersey Hitmen, the American Football League's (AFL) Carolina Cobras and Grand Rapids Rampage and the WNBA's Portland Fire.
The 2007 Storm season will open against the Houston Comets on Saturday, May 19, at 7 p.m. The following Wednesday, May 23, Seattle will host the Phoenix Mercury at 7 p.m. at KeyArena. The defending WNBA Champion Detroit Shock will visit KeyArena on Wednesday, June 20.
