San Antonio Stars News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - The San Antonio Silver Stars have acquired former Texas Christian University All-American Sandora Irvin from Phoenix in exchange for San Antonio's 2008 second-round draft pick, the team announced today. The trade is pending until Irvin passes a physical examination.
The 6'3" forward was the third overall pick of the 2005 WNBA Draft after averaging 14.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game during her college career. During her senior season at TCU, Irvin averaged nearly 20 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. Irvin spent her first two WNBA seasons in Phoenix where she averaged 2.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.74 blocks per game. She has played in 19 career WNBA games and recorded eight blocks in seven games during the 2006 season. She set a career high with four blocks versus San Antonio on August 19, 2005. In her rookie season, Irvin appeared in 12 games for the Mercury, averaging 3.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per games.
"Wow, when I got the news about San Antonio, I was ecstatic," said Irvin. "Playing basketball at TCU, Texas has become a second home for me. There is nothing like the opportunity to be close to and able to play in front of family (and) friends, and to be near your college fan base of support. I am truly grateful to the San Antonio Silver Stars and Coach Hughes for giving me the opportunity to play for this organization."
Irvin is the NCAA's all-time career blocks leader with 480. She also holds the single-game mark after swatting 16 shot attempts against the University of Alabama-Birmingham on Jan. 16, 2005. The Florida native is the niece of former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin.
Currently, Irvin is overseas playing for Club USP-CEU MMT Estudiantes (Madrid, Spain) in the First Division of the Liga Feminina (LF). In 14 games, Irvin has averaged 13.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 blocks per game. She is among the Spanish LF overall league leaders in points per game (15th), rebounds per game (third) and blocks per game (third).
The Silver Stars open their 2007 season at Phoenix on May 19 before hosting Connecticut May 23 at the AT&T Center. Full season and partial ticket plans are available starting as low as $49. For more information on tickets, call 210.444.5090.
