Storm Hosts Storm out Cancer Night Presented by Providence Swedish Cancer Institute

SEATTLE - The Seattle Storm today announced the eighth edition of Storm Out Cancer Night presented by Providence Swedish Cancer Institute on August 18 as the team hosts the Minnesota Lynx at 7 p.m. PT.

This year, Storm Out Cancer will honor Simone Edwards and her legacy. Edwards was a 6-foot-4 center born in Kingston, Jamaica, who helped the Seattle Storm claim its first WNBA Championship in 2004. Edwards died earlier this year after an arduous battle with ovarian cancer.

"Simone had a beautiful energy and a genuine passion for lifting the spirits of everyone around her," said Alisha Valavanis, Storm President and CEO. "We will forever remember Simone as the 'Jamaican Hurricane,' a true force of positivity, connection, and care."

To honor Simone Edwards, the Storm has pledged to allocate proceeds from Team Shop sales to Simone4Children, a foundation with the mission to empower Jamaican children by providing a safe and healthy learning environment while continuing to honor Simone Edwards' legacy.

Fans who wish to contribute can make purchases at the Team Shop located in the Lair during Friday's game, or online using the code SIMONE between August 17-19. In addition, the Storm has donated tickets to some of her most loyal fans for a fundraiser with 100% of the proceeds going towards Simone's preferred foundation.

In addition, the Storm Foundation has pledged to make a $20,000 donation to the Providence Swedish Cancer Institute's Patient Assistance Fund, which looks to provide financial support to patients for needs like rental assistance, childcare, assistance for groceries, utility assistance, quality of life medications, lodging costs for those coming from a distance for care, and transportation costs such as parking, gas or a taxi ride to appointments.

"We're proud to continue our long-standing partnership with the Seattle Storm and excited to mark our eighth-year hosting Storm Out Cancer Night," shared Dr. Sara Jo Grethlein, Executive Medical Director with Providence Swedish Cancer Institute. "We're grateful for their support of important services like the Patient Assistance Fund to help ease the way of our cancer patients."

The Storm will also hold a moment of silence in remembrance of the two Providence Swedish nurses, Brandy Escamilla and Josilyn Ruiz, who were victims of a shooting at the Gorge Amphitheater this past June.
