Inland Empire 66ers News Release
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - A night after Inland Empire shutout the Storm, Wynn Pelzer pitched six inspired innings as Lake Elsinore avoided a sweep with a 1-0 shutout win over the 66ers Thursday night.
The Storm scored their only run in the third of Inland Empire starter Chris Withrow. Sawyer Carroll singled to right and took second on a tough-luck error charged to Scott Van Slyke after the right fielder slid in front of the gap-bound ball and bobbled the exchange before he threw to second base.
Matt Clark was next at the plate and Withrow induced a foul pop up that catcher Alex Garabedian was unable to catch in front of the 66ers dugout. Granted the chance to stay at the plate, Clark singled to center to score Carroll with the decisive run.
Pelzer (8-5) struck out 7 and allowed just 4 hits and a walk in six dominant innings for the win.
Colt Hynes and Bryan Oland worked the final three innings for the Storm, with Oland getting the final four outs for his 21st save.
Scoring chances for the 66ers were almost non-existent, with Preston Mattingly the only player to reach second base after he singled and stole second in the third inning. With Trayvon Robinson on first and two outs in the sixth, Pedro Baez singled to left and Robinson tried to make it to third when Danny Payne had a minor bobble before throwing Robinson out at third to end the threat.
Withrow (5-6) was saddled with the loss, allowing an unearned run on 3 hits and 3 walks with 4 strikeouts in 5 innings.
The loss ends Inland Empire's road-winning streak at six games.
The 66ers travel to Lancaster on Friday to begin a four-game series with the JetHawks at 7 p.m. RHP Mario Alvarez (1-2, 6.17) takes the hill for Inland Empire while RHP Leandro Cespedes (4-6, 6.12) gets the call for Lancaster.
The Sixers return to Arrowhead Credit Union Park on Wednesday, July 15 for a four-game series against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all future 66ers games are available at www.66ers.com or by visiting the 66ers ticket office at 280 South E Street in San Bernardino.
