THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... winners of five straight and 12 out of 15 to begin the second half, open a four-game series against the Visalia Rawhide Friday evening at Recreation Park. San Jose swept the visiting High Desert Mavericks in their most recent series earning 12-2, 6-2 and 3-1 victories over the first half South Division champs. Last night, Clayton Tanner fired seven dominant innings with just one run and three hits allowed to earn the win. Tanner walked one and struck out eight before Daniel Turpen and Dan Runzler each worked a scoreless inning of relief out of the bullpen. Darren Ford (2-for-4) was the lone Giants player to finish with a multi-hit game while Thomas Neal's RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning brought home the go-ahead run for San Jose.
Five-Game Win Streak... San Jose has outscored the opposition by a 41-9 margin during their current five-game winning streak. The Giants posted 11-1 and 9-3 victories over the visiting Modesto Nuts last Sunday and Monday respectively before wins during the last three nights against High Desert. San Jose has had only one longer winning streak this season (7 games, June 19-28).
Fifth-Best Record In Minor League Baseball... San Jose (54-31, .635) currently owns the fifth-best overall record among full-season teams in all of minor league baseball. The Giants trail only the Low-A Fort Wayne TinCaps (58-26, .690), the Double-A Birmingham Barons (58-28, .674), the Double-A Akron Aeros (56-31, .644) and the High-A Brevard County Manatees (49-28, .636).
San Jose Stretches Series Win Streak To 10... The Giants have now won their last 10 series dating back to the first week of June. San Jose's last series loss came in a four-game set at Visalia from May 27-30. The Giants then split a four-game series with Stockton (May 31-June 3) before starting the current run. San Jose owns a 25-6 record in their last 31 games starting on June 5.
Pitching Leaders... The Giants are bidding to lead the California League in ERA for the sixth consecutive season as their 3.23 team earned run average is currently lowest among all teams. San Jose also boasts three out of the top seven pitchers individually in ERA: Scott Barnes (3rd - 2.93), Craig Clark (5th - 3.12) and Clayton Tanner (7th - 3.36).
Villalona To DL... First baseman Angel Villalona was placed on the disabled list yesterday after suffering a left quadricep strain while running the bases on July 7. Villalona, who had been scheduled to participate in the Futures Game this Sunday, but will now not be able to play, is hitting .267 with nine home runs and 42 RBI's this season. Villalona is expected to miss at least the next four weeks.
Bullpen Excellence... The Giants bullpen owns a sparkling 0.80 ERA (9 ER/101.0 IP) in the last 33 games (26-7 record) beginning with their contest on June 3. The San Jose bullpen allowed 11 runs in their 16-7 loss at Stockton on June 2 before the current run. Dan Runzler boasts a perfect 0.00 ERA (12.0 IP) since joining the club on June 8 from Augusta while fellow left-hander Wilmin Rodriguez has gone 13 straight appearances without allowing a run (13 2/3 IP). Steve Edlefsen has surrendered just three hits and no runs over his last 12 innings of relief spanning 10 outings and David Mixon has not yielded a run over his last 10 appearances (17 2/3 IP). Meanwhile, Daniel Turpen has been impressive all season with a 1.37 ERA in 29 games. The San Jose bullpen did not allow a run during the entire homestand that concluded last night (six games).
San Jose Wins League Record Fifth Consecutive First Half Title... The Giants won their fifth consecutive first half North Division title last month, despite sitting in sole possession of the top spot for only three out of 74 days (the final three days). San Jose finished the half with a 42-28 record - two games ahead of the Modesto Nuts (40-30). The Giants are the first team in California League history to win five consecutive first half titles, setting the new record last year. By virtue of winning the first half, San Jose reaches the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season while they also earn a first round bye. The Giants open the post-season on Saturday, September 12 at Municipal Stadium with Game One of the best-of-five North Division Series.

Visalia Rawhide... The Visalia Rawhide, an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, enter tonight's match-up with a 44-41 overall record and a 5-10 mark in the second half - seven games behind the Giants for the top spot. Visalia is last in the California League in batting average (.242), tied for ninth in home runs (43), but do boast the second-lowest team ERA (3.73). The Rawhide have dropped seven out of their last eight games and are 5-15 since June 16. Visalia and San Jose have split the first 10 meetings between the clubs this season with the Rawhide having posted a 4-3 record in games played at Recreation Park.
