Quakes Fall To JetHawks 8-7

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- Lancaster did not waste a lot of time getting on the scoreboard on Thursday against Quakes starter Michael Anton. After allowing a lead off single and a sacrifice bunt, Anton struck out Jon Gaston for the second out of the inning, but allowed a two-out RBI single to TJ Steele to give the JetHawks a 1-0 lead.

The Quakes stranded runners in scoring position in each the 2nd and 3rd innings before plating a run in the 4th. Efren Navarro led off with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out from Hector Estrella. With two outs, PJ Phillips lined a single to center to score Navarro to tie the game 1-1.

Rancho got back to offense in the 5th and took the lead away from the JetHawks. After Clay Fuller led off with a walk and Andrew Romine singled, both moved up 90 feet on a fielding error in left field on Romine's single. Fernando Abad came out of the bullpen for Lancaster and allowed a sacrifice fly to Jeremy Moore and an RBI ground out the Julio Perez to give the Quakes a 3-1 edge.

Lancaster came back with a run in the 6th as Jon Gaston tripled to left with one out and scored on a ground ball to second to make the score 3-2.

The Quakes added a run of their own in the bottom of the 6th to extend their lead as Carlos Colmenares reached on a fielder's choice after Hector Estrella led off the inning with a single. Colmenares went to second on a wild pitch and scored on an errant throw from catcher Koby Clemens to give the Quakes a 4-2 lead.

Michael Anton was still in for the Quakes in the 7th and hit lead off batter Koby Clemens to start the inning. After a double by Marcos Cabral, the JetHawks had the tying run at second. Anton then got a shallow fly out and an RBI ground out from Ronnie Ramirez to bring the score to 4-3. Brandon Barnes then hit a slow grounder to second baseman Hector Estrella, but the ball went under his glove for an error allowing Cabral to tie the game 4-4. After a wild pitch advanced Barnes to second, Gabriel Suarez singled to center scoring Barnes and gave Lancaster a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the 9th, Jay Brossman came up with a pinch hit single with one out to give the Quakes a chance. Rian Kiniry pinch ran for Brossman and immediately stole second base to represent the tying run. After Clay Fuller struck out, Andrew Romine came up clutch with a two-strike RBI single to center to score Kiniry and tie the game 5-5.

The game went to extra innings and after reliever Jeremy Haynes struck out the first two batters of the inning, TJ Steel double and Matt Weston walked to chase Haynes and bring in Ysmael Carmona from the bullpen. Koby Clemens was the first batter he faced and he hit a three-run home run to grab an 8-5 lead for Lancaster.

In the bottom of the 10th, Julio Perez led off with a single and Efren Navarro followed with a base hit to put runners on the corners with no outs. Hector Estrella then grounded out to second scoring Perez and advancing Navarro to second. With one out, Carlos Colmenares singled up the middle to bring home Navarro and bring the Quakes within a run at 8-7. PJ Phillips then struck out and with Rian Kiniry at the plate with two strikes, Colmenares was picked off of first on a ball in the dirt to end the game.

The Quakes will continue their home-stand with a four game series with Lake Elsinore Friday. Right hander Ryan Brasier will start for the Quakes against right hander Corey Kluber. Game time is scheduled for 7:35pm.
