Storm Forward Alicia 'Chelle' Thompson retires

SEATTLE - Seattle Storm forward Alicia Thompson today announced her retirement from the WNBA.

"Alicia Thompson is one of those special people who I feel very fortunate to have coached in both Indiana and here in Seattle," said Storm Head Coach Anne Donovan. "She was an integral part of our team's championship run last season. Alicia will be most remembered for her contributions off the court and in the locker room. She is the consummate professional and ultimate teammate who never put individual goals ahead of winning."

Appearing in 30 games for the Storm this season, Thompson averaged 2.8 points, 1.5 rebounds and 11.0 minutes per game. She tallied at least five points five times, including a season-high nine-point performance on Aug. 4 at Indiana. Thompson recorded her 100th career assist on June 26 at Minnesota and logged her 2000th career minute on Aug. 4 at Indiana.

A member of the 2004 WNBA Champion Storm, Thompson averaged 2.3 points, 1.0 rebound and 7.9 minutes in 23 games played. She led the team in assists in one game, recording five at Los Angeles on Sept. 3, 2004. Thompson tallied season highs in both points (9) and rebounds (4) against Connecticut on Sept. 12, 2004. She averaged 4.9 points, 1.9 rebounds and 10.4 minutes in eight games during the 2004 WNBA Playoffs.

Thompson played in 19 games during her rookie season with the New York Liberty in 1998. In 2000, Thompson was assigned by the WNBA to the Indiana Fever where she played for three seasons. She averaged 7.9 points and 3.4 rebounds in 20.1 minutes per game over three seasons with Indiana.

"I truly feel fortunate to have been a part of the WNBA for six seasons including last year's championship Storm team," said Thompson. "I'm going to miss all of my teammates and the team atmosphere. Most importantly, I'm grateful to Coach Donovan, the Storm organization and all of the fans who have supported me throughout my career in the WNBA."

Thompson signed with the Storm as a free agent on Feb. 10, 2004.

The Seattle Sonics & Storm manages the Puget Sound region's professional basketball franchises - the NBA's Seattle SuperSonics and the WNBA's Seattle Storm. The organization oversees all sales, marketing, finance, public relations and basketball operations for the teams. The Basketball Club of Seattle LLC owns both teams.
