Storm Fall on the Road to Des Moines, 3-1

URBANDALE, Iowa - The Des Moines Buccaneers used a three-goal second period to beat the Tri-City Storm, 3-1 on Saturday night at Buccaneer Arena. Storm goalie Pheonix Copley made a career-high 40 saves in the loss.

The game started off with Tri-City (3-5-0, 6 pts - 6th in Western Conference) scoring 7:18 into the first period on the eighth goal of the season for C Nick Lappin. LW Brad Schierhorn and RW Kenny Brooks earned assists on Lappin's goal that moves him into a tie with Youngstown's LW Austin Cangelosi for the league lead in goals.

Des Moines (2-4-1, 5 pts - 7th in Western Conference) would then get on the scoreboard with their first of the game at the 1:45 mark into the second period, as LW Ray Pigozzi tipped in a goal from D Connor Schmidt's right-point shot for his first of the season.

Pigozzi would then set up the game-winning goal by RW Kyle Irwin less than 11 minutes later in the second period. The Buccaneers would get a two-goal lead following Gasper Kopitar's first goal of the season with 55 seconds left in the period.

Copley would make 16 saves in the third period in route to his 40 saves in the loss. G Christian Frey would earn his first win of the season for the Buccaneers with 24 saves on 25 shots.

Tri-City went 0-for-2 on the power play, while going 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.

The Storm return home next Friday to host the Omaha Lancers for the first time this season. The Breeze 94.5 FM will air the game Friday night from the Viaero Event Center.

Notes: The Storm are now 0-2-0 this season against the Buccaneers and 34-21-5 in all-time meetings. Tri-City power play was held goalless for the first time following three-straight games with power-play goal, conversely the Storm penalty kill didn't allow a power play goal for the first time in four games. Storm C Adam Chalpik three-game point streak was also snapped in the loss. Lappin's goal makes it three-straight games with a goal for the Storm, as four of his goals this season were first goals in the game
