Storm F Carson Meyer Commits to Miami University
October 20, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - It's a family tradition when Carson Meyer talks about Miami University. His sister, Hayley, attends the school. Meyer's grandparents are also Miami graduates.
Once he arrived in Oxford, OH on Monday, Meyer says he needed 20 minutes to make his mind up that he wanted to spend his collegiate career playing hockey for the RedHawks. Late Monday, he made his commitment official.
"I went to Miami hockey camps for five or six straight years," said Meyer. "Once I got on campus it just felt right."
Meyer has had a whirlwind few months; back in August, he moved nearly 1,000 miles west from his hometown of Powell, OH to central Nebraska.
"I didn't really realize how much I loved Ohio until I got back," explained Meyer. "It felt like home."
Meyer, 18, is in his first USHL campaign and coming off one of the best seasons in his budding career. Last season, he led the T1EHL in points, 51, while playing for the Ohio Blue Jackets. Meyer's team played in the Columbus Blue Jackets' practice facility, attached to the NHL team's home rink, Nationwide Arena.
"I worked out with [Blue Jackets forward] Jared Boll all summer," said Meyer. "It's really cool to see how the work players put in the gym pays off on the ice."
This season, Meyer leads the Storm with four goals and is tied for second on the team with five points.
"He's been very good offensively, shown a knack to score and we look forward to continue helping him develop to be successful in college," said Bill Muckalt, Head Coach and General Manager of the Storm.
Meyer joins Storm forward Brian Hawkinson as a Miami (OH) commit. Former Storm players Jarod Palmer (2004-06) and Cody Murphy (2009-11) played in Oxford, OH. Palmer played six games for the Minnesota Wild in 2011-12. Meyer is the tenth active USHL player to commit to the RedHawks.
The school is a member of the NCHC and the Storm have commits to other NCHC schools - North Dakota (Andrew Peski), St. Cloud State (Jake Wahlin) and Colorado College (Austen Long).
Former RedHawks currently in the NHL include New Jersey Devils Captain Andy Greene, Rangers defenseman Dan Boyle, and Alec Martinez, who scored the game-winning goal in the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals.
Brian Kaufman, Head Coach of the Omaha Lancers, was an assistant at Miami and also spent his collegiate career in Oxford, OH.
"Growing up going to those games as a kid, it was always a dream of mine," said Meyer.
The Storm are on the road next weekend for two games, first against Omaha again with a 7:05 p.m. start on Friday, October 23. On Saturday, October 24, Tri-City travels to Sioux City to match the Musketeers at 7:05 p.m. Both games have a 6:45 p.m. pregame show on The Breeze 94.5.
The Storm celebrates Throwback Thursday at the Viaero Center against Waterloo on Thursday, October 29 and "Camo Night" Friday, October 30 against the Blackhawks. Both games start at 7:05 p.m.
