Storm Defeat Stars in Overtime 3-2

FRISCO, TX. - The Tri-City Storm defeated the Lincoln Stars by a final score of 3-2 in overtime Thursday night in the opening game of the 2022 USHL Frosty Cup. Ilya Nikolaev netted the game-winning goal to give the Storm nine consecutive victories. Mitchell Miller and Victor Czerneckianair also scored goals in the win for Tri-City. Goaltender Arsenii Sergeev stopped a season-high 44 shots on goal to record his league-leading 21st victory of the year. The Storm will battle the Stars again tomorrow night in the second and final game of the 2022 USHL Frosty Cup. Puck drop for tomorrow's game is scheduled for 7:00pm CT.

Each team was held off the scoreboard in Thursday's 1st period with Lincoln outshooting Tri-City 16-13. Mitchell Miller netted a powerplay goal at 10:29 of the 2nd period to put the Storm ahead 1-0. Miller's goal was his 14th of the season and is currently the most among USHL defensemen. Aidan Thompson scored his ninth goal of the season at 12:54 of the 2nd period to tie the game at 1-1. Thompson's goal was netted on the power play. Victor Czerneckianair scored his fourth goal of the season with less than four minutes left to play in Thursday's 2nd period. Lleyton Roed and Nate Benoit each notched an assist on the scoring play. Tri-City outshot Lincoln 18-15 in the 2nd period and carried a one-goal lead into the 3rd period.

The lone goal of the 3rd period was scored shorthanded by Lincoln's Noah Laba. Laba's goal was his fifth of the year and was assisted by Luke Johnson. The Stars outshot the Storm 14-8 in the 3rd period and the game required an overtime period to determine a winner. Ilya Nikolaev scored his 10th goal of the season at 3:46 of the overtime to give the Storm a 3-2 overtime win. Mitchell Miller and Lleyton Roed each notched an assist on the scoring play. Tri-City outshot Lincoln 4-1 in the overtime period but was outshot 46-43 overall in the game.

Arsenii Sergeev improved to 21-3-0-0 on the season in net for the Storm after stopping 44 of Lincoln's 46 shots on goal. Kaidan Mbereko made 40 saves on 43 shots and recorded the overtime loss in goal for the Stars. Tri-City improved to 27-5-1-0 in the victory and now holds a nine-point lead over the Chicago Steel for 1st place in the league standings.
