Guelph Storm News Release


Friday night the Storm shut out the East Division leading Niagara Ice Dogs 3-0 at the Sleeman Centre, in front of 4, 581 fans. Backstopped by Garret Sparks, the Storm went 1 for 5 on the Powerplay and were perfect on the Penalty Kill. 6 different Storm players had points in the victory. Jason Dickinson had a goal and an assist, Scott Kosmachuk and Zack Mitchell each had a goal. Hunter Garlent, Kyle Pereira and Francis Menard each had an assist on the night.

Saturday night's contest in Owen Sound was a hard fought battle which saw the Storm come out on top, winning the game 3-2. The Attack opened the scoring at the 11:03 mark of the First Period with a goal from Mike Halmo. The Storm would answer back in the Second Period with goals from Scott Kosmachuk and Zack Mitchell. Kosmachuk would score again in the Third extending the Storm lead to 3-1. The Owen Sound powerplay brought the game within a goal at the 13:50, with a goal from Jay Gilbert. The Storm would hang on to win the battle 3-2. Jason Dickinson and Scott Kosmachuk each had a two-point night.

Returning home to the Sleeman Centre on Sunday for an afternoon battle against the Kitchener Rangers, the Storm wore special jerseys to celebrate RBC Play Hockey Day. The Rangers opened the scoring early in the game with a goal from Tobias Rieder. Short handed late in the First, Kitchener would add one more goal from Ryan Murphy to double up on the Storm. Tanner Richard would answer back on the Storm Powerplay to bring the home team within one to end the period. Kitchener lit up the scoreboard in the Second frame scoring twice to extend their lead to 3 goals. The Storm started off the Third period on the Powerplay, and Jason Dickinson took advantage scoring 1:10 into the period. Zack Mitchell would add another goal to bring the Storm within one goal. Kitchener would add one more goal, and won the game with a final score of 5-3.

Storm Forecast

This weekend, the Storm host the Saginaw Spirit on Friday night. The team travels to Oshawa on Saturday to face the Generals for a 2:05 puck drop. Tuesday they head to Kitchener to take on the Rangers at 7:00pm.

Garret Sparks named Guelph Storm Player of the Week

The Guelph Storm announced that goaltender Garret Sparks is the Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 29th.

Sparks recorded two victories this past weekend and nabbed his fourth shutout of the season against the Central Division leading Niagara IceDogs. Instrumental in the two victories over the weekend, the 18 year old had a goals against average of 2.33 and a save percentage of 0.923 in two games. Blanking the IceDogs 3-0 on Friday night, the Elmhurst IL native made 37 saves and was named the first star of the game. On Saturday night in Owen Sound, Sparks earned first star honours making 40 saves and letting in just two as the Storm defeated the Attack 3-2. Sunday afternoon at the Sleeman Center, the Rangers handed the Storm their only loss on the weekend. Sparks was solid in net making 26 saves in the 5-3 defeat.

The Maple Leaf prospect, currently has a record of 18-14-1-2 with a goals against average of 2.81 and a 0.916 save percentage. He sits 9th overall in the league in save percentage and fourth in shutots with four.

Also considered this week was forward Jason Dickinson, who led all Storm players in points this weekend with five. He was the only player on the roster to record at least one point in every game as he tallied two goals and three assists.

Next up, the Storm host the Saginaw Spirit at the Sleeman this coming Friday for a 7:30pm start. Sunday they head to Oshawa to take on the Generals before making their way to Kitchener on Tuesday night to face off against the Rangers. This past Sunday, RBC and the Guelph Storm celebrated RBC Play Hockey� Day. The Storm faced off against the Kitchener Rangers wearing special Guelph Giants Replica Jerseys.

Guelph Giants replica jerseys will be auctioned off online between Thursday, February 2nd - Thursday, February 9th with all net proceeds going directly to the Guelph Giants Special Needs Hockey Club.

RBC Play Hockey� Day also raised money for the Guelph Giants through all tickets sold at local RBC branches plus 50/50 proceeds from the day also benefited the Giants. In addition, RBC Play Hockey� donated $2,000 to the Giants to launch the fundraiser.

Carstar Collision of the Month

Each week during the 2011-12 season, the Guelph Storm will name a Collision of the Game. Congratulations to Brock McGinn who won the hit of the month for November.

At the end of each month, fans will get the opportunity to vote for the CARSTAR Collision of the Month and eventually the CARSTAR Collision of the Year.

Voting is now open for the CARSTAR Collision of the month for December. Watch the video and decide who you think should win the CARSTAR Collision of the Month.

Coach4Food Practices Underway!

The Guelph Storm is pleased to announce that the Coach4Food practices are underway! Last Thursday, January 26th the Guelph Jr. Storm Novice AA team took to the ice at the Sleeman Centre with Storm General Manager Mike Kelly, Assistant Coach Chris Hajt as well as Storm players Cody McNaughton and Brock McGinn.

All practices will be held at the Sleeman Centre between 4:30 and 5:20. These practices are open to the public, and fans are encouraged to come out and watch!

In its first year running in Guelph, there was an overwhelming response from the teams that took part as over 11,500 pounds of food was collected.

2nd Annual "Storm the Giants" Charity game!

On Saturday, February 4th at 1pm the 2nd Annual 'Storm the Giants' fundraiser will be taking place at the Sleeman Centre. The event will highlight Guelph Storm players playing a charitable game alongside members of the Guelph Giants Hockey Club, a team of athletes with intellectual disabilities who will be showcasing their skills with their local heroes.

Tickets will be available at the door. All tickets are $5.
