Guelph Storm News Release

Trying to kick of a winning weekend, it began Friday with bad news, when the Storm hosted the Windsor Spitfires. Unable to generate any offence in this game, the Storm were blanked 5-0. However, this team usually finds a way to bounce back following a disappointing effort. They did just that on Saturday, when they visited the Petes. This game, Garret Sparks was the one to close the door, in his second shut out performance this season. Francis Menard got the Storm on the board with a short-handed goal in the first period and bailed his teammates, who were trying to hold off a Peterborough comeback, out with his second goal in the third period on the powerplay. Zack Mitchell scored on an empty net only a few minutes later to ensure the Storm would walk away with a win.

Storm Forecast

The Storm kick off their weekend on Thursday when they travel to Windsor to take on the Spitfires at 7:05 pm and then to Barrie on Saturday night for a 7:30 pm start. The Sarnia Sting visit the eye of the Storm on Sunday at 2:00 pm.

Tickets for Sunday's game are still available and can be purchased online or by visiting or calling the Storm Box Office at 519-837-9690.

Player of the Week

The Guelph Storm announced Monday that forward Frank Menard is the Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 15th.

Menard recorded three points, two goals and an assist, in two games this weekend. Held off the scoresheet on Friday night against the Spitfires, he rebounded with a three point game on Saturday in Peterborough. Showing great leadership, the 19 year old led the team on Saturday recording a point on every Storm goal. He scored the first two, including the short handed opener, and assisted on the Storm's third, Zack Mitchell's 21st of the year. Menard was a plus two and was named second star of the game.

With three points on the weekend, Menard sits third in team scoring with 36 points. The Embrun native leads the Storm in shorthanded goals with three.

U-17 and World Junior Presentation

Prior to the start of Friday's game against the Windsor Spitfires, the Storm held a ceremony to recognize the efforts of Windsor's Adam Bateman and Jordan Maletta and Guelph Storm, Hunter Garlent, who played on the bronze medal winning Ontario team in the World Under 17 Challenge.

Also recognized were Storm Head Coach, Scott Walker who was an Assistant coach with Team Canada, who also won bronze, and Tanner Richard, who competed for team Switzerland, in the 2012 World Junior Championship.

The Storm are proud to congratulate Hunter, Tanner, and Coach Walker on their achievements!

On Friday, December 16th, at the downtown RBC branch, Storm players Kyle Pereira, Cody McNaughton and Brandon Foote were on hand for a press conference to reveal the special Guelph Giants jerseys to be worn on January 29th during the RBC Play Hockey day at the Storm.

The Guelph Storm is proud to announce that their home game against the Kitchener Rangers on January 29th is RBC's Play Hockey Day at the Storm. RBC's Play Hockey is an initiative designed to support those who help hockey happen.

With the Play Hockey Day on the 29th, the Storm and RBC are pleased to support the Guelph Giants, a Special Hockey Foundation dedicated to encouraging, empowering and enabling athletes with an intellectual disability to participate in an inclusive hockey program.

Replica Guelph Giants jerseys will be worn during the game by all Storm players and auctioned off at a later date. All net proceeds from the jersey auction, 50/50 proceeds from the game and $5 from every ticket sold at RBC branches to the Play Hockey Day on January 29th when the Storm host the Kitchener Rangers, will be donated to the Guelph Giants.

"RBC is excited to partner with the Guelph Storm to support the Guelph Giants during RBC's Game Day on January 29th," said Laurie Davidson, regional vice president for Guelph and North Halton. "Hockey is Canada's game and we want to ensure those who love the game, have the opportunity to play hockey. RBC is proud to kick off this fundraising drive with a $2,500 donation and encourage residents to visit any RBC branch over the next few weeks in Guelph, Milton and Georgetown to get your tickets and help us support an outstanding local hockey organization."

Tickets are still available for this special game and can be purchased by visiting or calling the Guelph Storm Box Office at 519-837-9690. If you'd like to support the Giants and purchase tickets through RBC, they are available at all RBC branches in Guelph, Georgetown, Rockwood, Acton and Milton.
