Cord Helps Majors over Bulls

January 18, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Alex Cord picked the perfect time to score his first goal of the season.

Cord's power play goal at 16:12 of the second period turned out to be the game-winner as the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors edged the Belleville Bulls 3-2 in Ontario Hockey League play Wednesday night in Belleville.

Brandon Maxwell made 34 saves and Jamie Wise and Riley Brace scored the other Mississauga goals as the Majors moved into a tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings, just a point behind the fifth place Barrie Colts.

General Manager/Head Coach James Boyd says the tightness of the standings just shows how important these games are against East rivals.

"It's going to be that tight right to the end," Boyd said. "You can move up or down a couple of spots on any given night so you know it's going to be a real battle for the last few playoff spots.

"Teams that deal with adversity in the second half are the teams that will find a way to get in. I thought we played really well defensively tonight and Maxwell was outstanding. He made the saves when we really needed them in the second and third period so all around, that's a big win for us."

Wise opened the scoring with his 16th goal of the season, assisted by Mika Partanen and Dylan DeMelo at 9:32 of the first period to give the Majors a 1-0 lead. The Bulls responded two and a half minutes later with a goal by former Major Joseph Cramarossa to tie things up, assisted by Dylan Corson and Luke Judson at 12:05. With just over four minutes remaining in the period, Riley Brace improved his club leading goal total to 22, from Sergey Kuptsov and DeMelo at 15:59 to send the Majors into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.

Michael Curtis made it a 2-2 game at 2:36 of the second period from Adam Payerl and Garrett Hooey, but it was Cord who broke the stalemate on the powerplay from Trevor Carrick and Partanen at 16:12.

Brandon Maxwell earned the win in goal for the Majors making 34 saves, while Charlie Graham stopped 30 shots in a losing effort for the Bulls.

There were just two power play opportunities during the game, one each for the Majors and Bulls, with the Majors being the only team to capitalize going 1-for-1.

The Majors will return home to the Hershey Centre on Friday, January 20th after four straight games on the road when they host the Brampton Battalion at 7:30 p.m. They?ll close out the weekend against the Saginaw Spirit on Sunday, January 22nd at 2 p.m. Tickets to those games are still available by visiting www.ticketmaster.ca, by calling 905-502-7788, or in person at the Hershey Centre box office.
