Guelph Storm News Release
The Storm had three important inter-Conference games this weekend, starting when they hosted the Owen Sound Attack on Friday night. Then the team was off to Michigan, where they dropped a game on Saturday to the Plymouth Whalers but picked up two points in Saginaw on Sunday.
On Friday night, the Storm took on a team they were hoping to catch in the Divisional standings, the Owen Sound Attack. The Attack registered the only goal of the first period on the powerplay, but the Storm came back with a powerplay goal of their own by Scott Kosmachuk in the second to tie the game 1-1. The Attack however, struck early in the third period to regain the lead and then once more shorthanded. With Garret Sparks out of the net in the game's last minute, the Storm could not capitalize and Mike Halmo of the Attack would get his third of the game in an empty net. The Attack would take the game by a score of 4-1.
Kicking off their Michigan road trip on Saturday with a stop in Plymouth, the Storm engaged in a back and forth affair between a team that they have had mixed results with so far this season. Plymouth got on the board first with two goals, before Brock McGinn and Stephen Gaskin evened the score 2-2 to end the first. The second period saw no further edge for either team, as Zack Mitchell's short handed goal was countered by a Plymouth goal late in the period. Too quick goals opened the third, the first by Plymouth and the second by Cody McNaughton. The goal swap continued as Plymouth scored on a powerplay and then Mitchell would get his second of the game. The Whalers would respond soon after though, to pull ahead 6-5 and with netminder, Brandon Foote out of the net, they would ice the game with an empty net goal to make the final 7-5.
The Storm rolled into Saginaw on Sunday hoping to return home with a win. The Spirit, however would give the Storm a scare early, when they scored short-handed early in the first. From then on, however the Storm would take over the game, getting goals from Tanner Richard, Patrick Watling, McNaughton, Hunter Garlent, and Spencer Turcotte. The Storm won this game by a score of 5-1.
