Guelph Storm News Release

The Storm struggled last week playing the OHL's best Windsor Spitfires and the Owen Sound Attack. Friday night in Guelph, the Storm jumped out to a one goal lead early when Matt Kennedy scored on the powerplay at 5:53 of the first. That would turn out to be the only lead the Storm would have as the Spitfires scored five times to defeat the Storm 5-2 and gain the two points. Storm captain Matt Kennedy scored both Storm goals in the loss. Saturday in Owen Sound the Storm tallied four times scoring once in the first, twice in the second and a final time in the third, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Attack as they would drop a 5-4 decision. For the second time in as many nights Storm captain Matt Kennedy scored twice for a weekend total of four.

With two losses this weekend, the Storm remain second in the Midwest with 57 points and a record of 26-17-2-3.

For the second week in a row and the third time this month, the Guelph Storm has named captain Matt Kennedy the Grand & Toy Player of the Week. For the week ending Sunday, January 12th Kennedy posted four points, all of them goals.

Kennedy was the Storm's leading point getter recording four of the team's six goals over the weekend. Scoring twice in both games, Kennedy tallied three powerplay goals and was given second star honours in both contests.

With his four points this past weekend and eight in his last four games, Kennedy continues to lead the Storm in scoring with 50 points. The 19 year old also leads the team in goals with 26 and leads not only his team, but the entire OHL in powerplay goals with 14. The Storm captain is currently playing at just over a point per game pace.

Next up, Kennedy and the rest of the Storm host the Peterborough Petes for their lone regular season visit to the Sleeman Centre on Friday night before travelling to Erie on Saturday to take on the Otters.

Peter Holland an All-Star

The event features a skills competition on Tuesday February 3, 2009, beginning at 7:00 pm with the game taking place Wednesday February 4, 2009, at 7:00 pm at the Windsor Family Credit Union Centre.

7 Day 'Storm Forecast'

On Friday night, the Storm will face the Peterborough Petes for the first time in over a year. After Friday, Guelph will play only two more games against the Eastern Conference. On Saturday, the Storm travel to Erie where the Otters always pose a threat.

Storm to honour McCollum

On Friday, February 20th before the game against the Owen Sound Attack the Storm's all time leader in career shutouts and goals against average will return to the Sleeman Centre for an on ice presentation.

The Storm will honour former goaltender Thomas McCollum for his particpation in the World Junior Championship in Ottawa over the Christmas break. Joining the Brampton Battalion at the trade deadline, McCollum hasn't played a game in Guelph since December 12th.

The team will honour the Sanborn native, as they do all World Junior participants, by placing his name high in the rafters among the list of Guelph Storm participants.

McCollum played three seasons with the Storm. Signed as a free agent in 2006, the 19 year old was recently drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1st round (30th overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft.
