Storm Announce Assistant GM and Confirm Coaching
GUELPH, ON - Guelph Storm General Manager & Head Coach George Burnett announced today that Phil Golding has been named the team's Assistant General Manager.
Golding joined the organization in 2007 after graduating with a degree in Sport Management from Brock University, and has spent the past decade working in the team's business operations department. For the past two seasons, Golding has worked with the club's scouting staff and also served as Assistant to the General Manager in 2016-17.
"Phil will be involved in all aspects of hockey operations, including administration, scouting and player development," said Burnett. "He has been a great asset for me during the transition to Guelph and I look forward to working closely with him as we prepare for the new season."
"I am very excited for this new opportunity and the challenges it will provide," said Golding.
"Assisting George and the rest of our hockey operations staff will be a priority as we continue to build a championship-calibre team here in Guelph."
Burnett confirmed the club's coaching staff for the 2017-18 season. Returning to the Storm are Assistant Coaches Todd Harvey and Luca Caputi, along with Goaltending Coach Matt Smith.
"Working with a staff that knows and understands our group will have some major advantages," said Burnett. "Todd, Luca and Matt each bring unique experience, perspective and skills to our program."
Todd Harvey joined the Storm as an Assistant Coach during the 2013-14 season, and was an integral part of the team's run to the 2014 OHL Championship. A Hamilton native, Todd was selected first overall in the 1991 OHL Priority Selection and recorded 249 points in three OHL seasons with the Detroit Jr. Red Wings. His playing career included two gold medals representing team Canada at the IIHF World Junior Championship, and 671 NHL games across 12 seasons with the Dallas Stars, New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks and Edmonton Oilers.
Luca Caputi will enter his third season as Assistant Coach, having joined the team in August 2015. The Toronto native was selected in the 2nd round of the 2004 OHL Priority Selection and recorded 205 points in 230 games with the Niagara IceDogs organization. He played 35 NHL games across three seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Matt Smith enters his sixth season as the club's Goaltending Coach. A former goaltender himself, Smith brings extensive experience in goaltending instruction to the Storm. He owns and operates a goaltending training centre based in Cambridge.
