PORT ST. LUCIE Fla. (July 7, 2015) - The Charlotte Stone Crabs handed the St. Lucie Mets a fourth straight loss with a 5-3 win at Tradition Field on Tuesday night.
Jeff Ames struck out Champ Stuart and got Jeff McNeil to pop out to end the game with the tying run at second base.
The Crabs broke a 3-3 tied in the eighth on an RBI sac fly by Keon Wong. They scored an insurance run on another sac fly by Jace Conrad in the ninth.
Logan Taylor only needed 86 pitches to get through eight innings but he took the tough loss. Only two of the four runs scored against him were earned.
Reliever Steve Ascher improved to 5-0 by pitching a scoreless seventh and eighth. Ames collected his third save. Earlier in the day Brad Schreiber, the FSL's saves leader, was promoted from the Crabs to Double-A.
The Mets took a 1-0 lead on a leadoff home run by Champ Stuart in the first.
The Stone Crabs scored three runs in the third. They loaded the bases with no outs and got an RBI sac fly from Wong. Jairo Perez cut off the throw home and threw wildly to third base and the ball escaped into left field, allowing the two other Crabs on base to score.
The Mets tied the game 3-3 in the fourth. Perez led off with a single and went to third on a base hit by Dominic Smith. Braxton Lee's throw from the outfield to get Perez at third sailed into the camera well. Perez was awarded home and Smith went to third. Smith then scored on a wild pitch by Brent Honeywell to make it 3-3.
Taylor retired 12 in a row at one point but that ended on a leadoff single by Granden Goetzman in the eighth. Goetzman went to second on a sac bunt and moved to third on a single. He scored the go-ahead run on Wong's sac fly.
Jeff Walters, coming off of Tommy John surgery and added to the roster before the game, pitched the ninth for the Mets.
The Mets lost their fourth game in a row. It's only their second losing streak of four games this season.
The Mets (40-43, 5-8) continue their series against the Stone Crabs at Tradition Field on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game can be heard on www.stluciemets.com.
