Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
JUPITER, Fla. (July 7, 2015) - The Fort Myers Miracle held onto a one-run lead after a late rally to defeat the Jupiter Hammerheads, 4-3, at Roger Dean Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Miracle built a three-run advantage after falling behind 1-0 in the fourth inning. Miracle starter Aaron Slegers was brilliant in seven strong frames, but gave up his only in the fourth. Austin Dean started the inning with a slow roller to third base. Bryan Haar's throw sailed past first baseman Alex Swim and Dean took off for second base. After Brian Anderson struck out, Avery Romero got aboard with an infield single to put runners on the corners with on out. Slegers (6-4) then induced a weak ground ball off the bat of Justin Bohn to third. Haar tried to start a double play and retired Romero at second, but Bohn beat the turn to first and a run scored, 1-0.
Jupiter starter David Steckenrider delivered five scoreless in a no decision. Steckenrider struck out six, walked one and allowed just three hits.
In the sixth, the Hammerheads went to the bullpen and called in left-hander Chipper Smith. Swim greeted the new reliever by beating out an infield hit to second, then advancing to second on a wild pitch. Smith (0-1) got Mitch Garver to fly out to left, but issued a walk to Marcus Knecht. Haar then yanked a 1-2 pitch through the left side to load the bases. Jason Kanzler stepped up and tapped a ball to third base. Anderson bobbled the third bounce and a run scored to tie the game, 1-1.
Hammerhead manager Brian Schneider brought in C.J. Robinson to face Chad Christensen. On a 2-1 pitch, Christensen chopped a ball to short. Bohn forced out Kanzler at second, but Christensen beat Romero's throw to first and Knecht scored, 2-1.
The Miracle added to the lead with two more runs in the seventh off Robinson. Zack Granite led off with a bunt single and Engelb Vielma followed with a liner to right. Robinson got Swim to fly out to center field for the first out. Garver then tagged a 1-2 pitch into left center field for an RBI single. Austin Dean's throw was cut-off by Anderson and Vielma was nearly out on the bases at third. Anderson's throw to Bohn covering the bag went wild and Vielma raced home, 4-1.
Slegers exited after seven innings with just one run given up on six hits. Issuing no walks, Slegers fanned three and earned the win.
Corey Williams tossed a perfect eighth with a pair of strikeouts, but Minnesota Twins 2015 first round pick Tyler Jay struggled in the ninth. MLB rehabber Martin Prado led off with a single down the first base line and advanced to second on a ground out by Dean. Jay then struck out Anderson, but walked Romero. With two-on and two outs, Bohn and Felix Munoz delivered back-to-back RBI singles to cut the Miracle lead to one run, 4-3. Jay retired Chris Hoo on a 3-2 pitch with a fly out to center to end the game and preserve the win. The save was Jay's first with the Miracle.
The Miracle (47-36, 9-4) have won four in a row and return to Roger Dean Stadium on Wednesday evening at 6:35 p.m. in game two with Jupiter (39-44, 4-9). Fans can listen to the action with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman on www.miraclebaseball.com.
