Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

A Jason Stokes grand slam to straight-away centerfield highlighted a five-run Albuquerque third and lifted the ‘Topes to a 6-2 victory over the University of New Mexico in exhibition play Tuesday at Isotopes Park. The seven-inning game marked the final preseason tune-up for Albuquerque. The squad hits the road for the season opener this week in Iowa.

Six Isotope pitchers combined to scatter seven hits over seven innings, with right-hander Yusmeiro Petit earning the win out of the bullpen. Starter Nic Ungs allowed a run on three hits in two innings of work. After Ungs' exit, the bullpen limited the Lobos to four hits and a run over the final five innings.

Stokes was one of eight ‘Topes to collect a hit on the day, with Drew Niles coming off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs.

The Lobos got on the board first, using back-to-back hits and an RBI groundout by Ian Hollick to take an early 1-0 lead. That lead would prove to be New Mexico's last, as the Isotopes exploded for five runs in the third Stokes, who flied out in his first at-bat, hit a 1-0 Quentin Andes offering over the wall in center to clear the bases and put the Isotopes on top 4-1.

Albuquerque pushed across one more in the fourth, as Niles singled to left field for the second-straight inning, driving home catcher Tom Wilson, who tripled to lead off the frame.

New Mexico carved into the deficit in the sixth, once again relying on the top-third of its order for offense. Matt Foote singled for the third time on the evening, stole second and was brought around to score one batter later by a Chris Carlson double. That put the score at 6-2, which would remain through the final out.

Foote and Carlson combined for five hits, both New Mexico runs and an RBI on the night. Andes, one of five Lobo hurlers to take the hill, was pinned with the loss. He allowed five runs on five hits in 0.1 innings. Starter Jesse Perez scattered a hit and no runs in two innings of work.

The ‘Topes are set to hit the road for two-straight series to kick-off the 2006 Pacific Coast League season. Albuquerque will make trips to Iowa and Omaha before coming home for an eight-game home stand.

Opening night versus the New Orleans Zephyrs will feature a Sports Bag giveaway to the first 3,500 fans courtesy of Sandia Resort and Casino with the following night, April 15, featuring the first fireworks show of the 2006 season.
